My dh is now eating pureed foods and thickeners to see if that helps with his mucous issues. I looked for the old electric baby food warming dishes but did not have any luck. Even asked a young mother while looking at Target. Any suggestions?

That is a really good idea! Also I was wondering if baby food would be nutritious enough because ensure would be pretty expensive especially if they won't eat at all.

Carnation Instant Breakfast is a better tasting alternative to Ensure or Boost....less expensive, too.

I agree with Sandi, Carnation Instant Breakfast is cheaper. My husband would not drink either Ensure or Boost. He loved the Strawberry & Vanilla, especially with ice cream added. I did only give it to him in the morning after he started having problems with mucus.

We're doing the babyfood as well but also an Ensure shake each day. The ER nurse did tell us the other day that the Carnation Breakfast drink tasted much better.

My dh enjoys the Boost. You have to read the labels as they are not all the same - some are higher in protein and others have high fiber. I haven't tried the Carnation so will have to compare the labels.

I also have powdered protein that I add to his oatmeal in the mornings. I use the hand mixer to stir the powder, banana and oatmeal to a smooth consistency. I just use the mixer to puree the canned fruits as well. My biggest issue is meat. Does protein stay in the system all day? Will have to look this up. I am thinking about adding thickener to the cold Boost to see if it is more like ice cream. Oh, the games we have to play sometimes.

I did Google food warmers and found most were used and very old. Newer ones you add hot water. Contacted GE and Gerber but they don't make them any longer.

I will say that since eating these new foods, his bowels are more regular. Sounds good to me as we have had so many issues with constipation.

I got the Boost to add to DH's diet..the chocolate..not bad at first but then has an aftertaste that I don't care for.

its better if its mixed like a shake with icecream. if calories are an issue you can get sugar free icrecream instead.

Brindle, for a warmer you might try putting the baby food in a cup and use one of the warmers they have for coffee! I have a "desk" type coffe warmer I use for lots of things...including putting left over pieces of scented candles in a safe container...letting it melt it and refresh the room. About $6.00.

    Grannywhiskers.
I have one that I also use for candles. May try this. Right now I just microwave each dish. I also experimented with cooked hamburger and grinding it with a little liquid along with the baby food. Worked pretty well and a lot more tasty than the baby food. Also took chicken noodle soup and made it a puree. Then as a change added some instant potato flakes. Not bad.

Brindle...you already got it going your way!!

My DH is still eating a little bit at 2 p.m., but not much. Should I wait until he is not eating anything or do it now? My concern is that if I start it now he will forgo food earlier than he normally would just because if he had his way all he would eat is sweets. I know that eventually that will be the way it is anyway and I have resigned myself to the fact that I won't be able to get him to eat healthy for much longer.

deb i would try to get anything down him by any means. baby food or shakes or if you have no choice give him puddings and things you know he will eat. oatmeal with honey and applesauce/cinammon, cereal with milk, etc at this point i dont think its about all nutrition anymore. just caloric intake unless they are diabetic. puddings have eggs/milk, sugar/flour but you can get sugar free in lots of things, so it can be ok, icrecream as well. sometimes they can come out of the slump of non eating at some point and get a better appetite back for a change. our dr told me to give him anything he will eat and not worry to much about what it is.
