Not a nice topic, is it? DH has started coughing and gagging when he gets up in the morning. Usually lasts about 10 min. No phlegm. Then he will sneeze several times - and no more coughing or gagging. Then it happened tonight. He had been in bed about 2 hours, and it started. Same thing. As soon as he sneezed a couple of times, cough went away. Any ideas?

vickie maybe flu? its starting the rounds early this year. he may have a sore throat .. allergies are rampant as well. maybe try a claritin first and see if it helps. if not i'd call the dr. any new 'symptom' is alway sa concern since they cant tell us how they feel.

My dog runs for cover when my dh sneezes. Just too loud of a noise for her.

Hanging On, my DH sneezes so loud that if I don't know it is coming I put a hole in the ceiling! Vickie, does he do it any other time like when he is eating for instance? Sounds like allergies to me but if other things like eating precipitate it also then it could be something else.

It could be GERD too. Acid will come up and make him cough and sometimes irritate enough to make him sneeze and then settle down. I get that sometimes.

Vickie, sorry to hear this. Is it still happening? I know at the nursing home the flu season started early. Colds aplenty too. Lynn rebounded beautifully, thank God! Another thing that comes to mind is that Lynn will cough some every morning when we get him up. The doctor said it is because Lynn isn't able to walk and gets little exercise. He also insist that this mild coughing is actually good. Of course he isn't gagging though, that would add to the concern. Is your DH active?

Thanks, Phil; I wondered about GERD.

Nikki, he is still fairly active, although his walking is not as good as it was. But he does things, is up and about.

He did not do it after dinner last night, nor this a.m. when he got up. Who knows. If it isn't one thing, it's something else, it seems.
