After hearing about a particularly trying episode I had with DH's family, my sister passed along a response that she had heard for just such occasions. I think I'm going to carry a card with this inscribed on it, so I will have it handy when the next time comes. It is: "Are you trying to be rude, or are you just stupid?" I think every caregiver will run into a time or two when this response would come in handy. While this comeback is fairly rude, so are many of the questions and comments that caregivers have to endure. Many times I just let things go, sometimes I try to educate people about dementia, but other times—well, other times this seems like the absolutely perfect response.
