divvi--though this is written as though for children caring for their parents it is totally valid for us Spouses. It is absolutely vital that we get help in early, take care of ourselves, and find (make) ways to have respite. Our LOs may not take to helpers, at first, but if ever a crisis were to land the Caregiver in the hospital, their LO would be in a bad spot, and that is avoidable. Day Care, In-home help, volunteer companionship--whatever we can arrange can only help provide us the time away to recharge. The old phrase about safety instructions on an airplane aren't just talk. They are a key to surviving. In a crisis put your own airmask on first; then see to your LO. That way you both have a good chance to get through.
