Three nighs in row-a little too many! Yogi has now visited for the third night, tonight he came at 7;30,got nothing(remembered to put cat food in).He is still in the yard.I called the DNR today they said just keep all foods and trash sealed airtigt and he will stop coming.Lot of help they are. Sorry guys I know this has nothing to do with ALZ. but you all are the only ones to talk to late in the evenings. P.S. last night he took not only a fed pan but one of my shoes that I leave on the porch!
OMG Betty! I’ve read about your dilemma on facebook! Unbelievable that the DNR won’t do anything about it. What, are they going to wait until he mauls someone? It would be funny if it wasn’t so dangerous. Please keep us informed.
I know it's not funny, and I know bears are really dangerous, but somehow, dealing with Alzheimer's all day, and then finding a bear in your yard at night is a picture that did make me laugh.
Try playing the Alzheimer's card. I do it when I need to. Tell the DNR that your husband has Alzheimer's Disease, and you are afraid he will wander out into the path of the bear. See if that gets them to do something about it.
Joan-I did tell them about my alz. husband and my 93 year old Mom just down the road. They said keep them inside .Guess they do not understand alz. or an independent 93 year old mother! nellie-It is against the law to shoot bear in our county, but if this keeps on we may be in a fight with the justice system over a new bear skin rug at my house. An Joan,as you said it is not funny, but the bear and my dh both have a few things in common 1.they both just stare at me when I yell or talk loudly to them(both with those blank looking eyes) 2.They both make messes that I have to clean up 3.They both keep me up at night 4.they both are driving me nuts!!!!
bak call the local radio, TV stations, newspaper. Tell them of your concerns. Ad and DH. Mayor, city council, neighbors. Make waves. Be a pain in the a$$. Call DH doctor and get a letter that you can not make sure he does not go outside when the bear is there. My goodness your DH could even think it was a pet dog and go out to see it!
Good luck with this, I am so sorry it is happening to you.
bak those comparisons made me smile. and i thought i had it bad with friendly squirrels. i think a bear would make me quite nervous. up north a man shot a small grizzly bear that was on his property AFTER his kids were brought indoors, and now is having the authorities threatening endangered species charges, etc. they say in many states there are protocols to follow to try to dissuade them to leave without injury FIRST, and you can only resort to killing if you are in immediate danger and have tried everything else.esp if they are endangered - i know it would be scary either way.
A few years ago a bear took down our bird feeder. I called the game warden and asked that the bear be tranquilized and moved, but this could not be done - bear would not know where food was and would not have a den. I told warden that I did NOT want bear shot, but he told a friend about the bear. Friend came out and shot bear with a bow and arrow, hitting it over the shoulder blade. All this did was make bear angry. A year later bear was seen with arrow still sticking out of shoulder. Fortunately, bear seems to be avoiding contact with humans and is seen around houses only at night.
