I am sure others have dealt with this -DH is forgetting he has eaten and eating dinner, then in 20 minutes to an hour, getting a bagel or two then again in an hour or so another bagel or two. He is gaining weight and with his back issues this will be a problem. Any advice? I have tried telling him he has just eaten and he replies that he is hungry. This is not typical for him at all.

Yes we are in this mode now. Then there are the times he is not hungry at all.

about the only thing to do in this overeating stage is buy only foods that are healthy and not a calorie issue. maybe replace bagels with whole wheat rolls or crackers or fruit or carrot/celery stix. its the urge to eat not really what they eat alot of the times. having dishes of healthy snax out may help with the weight issues.

Lol! My son and I were just observing this last night with my DH. We went to a Japanese Steakhouse to celebrate our 25th anniversary. They serve a boatload of food; I take half of mine home in a "to go" box. DH ate all of his salad and meal, along with all of my salad - so he had more than a boatload of food. We came home and within on hour he was eating a bowl of potato chips! A half hour later he was having ice cream! My son and I were amazed; there is no way either of us could have put another morsel of food in our mouths :)

DH also forgets he has had lunch and eats another one an hour or two later. Or he may eat lunch at 10 or 11 o'clock. At dinner he eats everything and then anything I have that is left over and then he wants dessert, which is always fruit.

My DH even tries to eat the pattern on his plate. He'll sit there for quite a while just scraping and scraping the pattern trying to get even that last bit of food.

Enjoy it while you can.....then they will stop eating and you will see their weight drop quickly. We are at this stage.

Did he miss the overeating stage! My DH doesn't have an appetite at all! If I wasn't home he wouldn't eat lunch. He is losing weight.

My dh does not seem to know when he is hungry-if you do not put the food in front of him and watch-he would strave! He is not losing weight yet but I sit beside him and keep encourageing him to eat.

phil4:13, my DH went from 199 to 178 in less than 4 months. Like I said he never did do the overeating stage. At this rate he is going to be 130 by March of next year, which is what the hospice said he needed to be. Others have told me that with how tall he is he won't make it to 130 so I guess we will see one way or another. Do you think I should introduce ensure now or wait until he has no appetite at all?

deb42657, How tall is your husband? My husband has went from 190 to 158 since March....he is so thin now...bones protruding everywhere. I would hate to see him at 130. I give him Carnation Instant Breakfast every morning with his meal. I was making a shake with ice cream in the evenings, however, he has been having problems with mucus, so I have discontinued that. He would not drink Ensure.

Kadee, my DH is 5'9". It sounds like our husbands are losing at about the same rate. I think medicare is responsible for the new hospice qualifier. Oh well! I guess unless something drastic(more drastic) happens he will die at home with just him and me.

My DH has gone from 175lbs. 3 months ago to 152 now. He was 6'2" but has shrunk a bit. For the last three days I have been battling him over food. He will say he is hungry and I will fix him something he says sounds good to eat and he will not touch a bite of it! I hand fed him 1/2 a banana this morning a little piece at a time. He is not drinking much either. Told him if he didn't start eating he would need to go to the hospital for IV's. Before all this he was a physician.......but it didn't sink in.

I think that is why I stay home as often as I can so that I can feed him or he won't eat. My DH won't eat a lot even then but if I smother everything with horseradish he well eat it but every week or so he comes up with a change in how much and what to eat, it is always different. I have quit questioning it or giving him a hard time about it because it is not worth it to me, meals are something he is obstinate about.
