I just read a story in People Magazine that has nothing to do with Alzheimer's Disease, but touched me so deeply that I had to share it with you.
It is the story of 7 year old Evan Moss who suffers from severe life threatening seizures. He needed a seizure dog (They have special abilities that can sense when a seizure is coming on, and they are trained to warn sufferers in advance, so they can take precautions.) The dogs cost $13,000 each, which Evan's family could not afford. Seven year old Evan decided to write a book to raise money to be able to get the dog. The book, My Seizure Dog, which is only $10, sold so well that not only did Evan raise the $13,000 needed for him to get a dog, he raised enough so two other children who suffer from seizures could get dogs. Any money now raised from the book will continue to help buy dogs for other children who need them. I bought a copy. If you would like to buy one, the direct link to the book is on my home page - www.thealzheimerspouse.com - on the right hand side, or you can copy and paste this link: http://astore.amazon.com/wwwthealzheim-20/detail/1463566719
No, Joan, not off topic. Didn't you start this site as a way for people to reach out to others. Wonderful story about the boy. I read it elswhere but didn't realize how expensive the dogs are. I worked with a woman who had a seizure cat. It gave her enough warning that she could drop to the ground without injury.
A young man who attended our church suffered with MS for many years. When he became almost totally disabled they got an aid dog who was by his side always. The dog attended school and church with him and was so attentive but completely quiet at all times. The young man (20 yrs. old) has passed away now but his mother still brings the dog to church. It is very touching I'm sure this is her connection with her Josh.
Phranque - you are too much! I so appreciate your humor, even in the face of everything you are going through right now. Thank you, you give us all so much joy.
You would fit right in with our youngest son when he has a seizure. He has complex partial seizures where you have an absence seizure and pass out then when you come to you start marching or walking like you are in a trance, until the switch in the brain cuts off. You could walk along with him and both of you look like you are having the time of your life.......Oh, he doesn't drink but you can carry two beers for yourself and no one will know they are both yours......
I work with a woman who has a Pomeranian that is a service dog. She will alert her if a seizure is coming on - the woman is very allergic to latex from years as a scrub nurse.
