One of the caregivers at the home where my husband lives has a cool way of changing the pull-ups and she doesn't have to remove the pants and shoes. This is a big plus when you just got someones shoes and pants on and have to do a change. She agreed to let me video to share this technique with you all. This requires some cooperation from the changee so perhaps wouldn't work for all but I thought it would be a good idea for some to try. Here is the link if you want to watch and learn. I was very careful not to show anything private but he is sitting on the toilet. You can cut the old pull-up on the sides or just rip it like we do for quick removal of the soiled unit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTmRAoOmdDk
Jules, I had to chuckle when I saw the toilet paper being handed out. Happens here all the time. I'm going to have to try this technique except that there is not enough room in the bathroom to get in front of DH and I can't get down on my knees. Will have to move him to the bedroom.
Amazing! You are right, it does seem to require cooperation from the patient; also, it looked like he was wearing shorts. Has she done it with long pants?
marilyninMD, those are long pants, very nice from Penneys with elastic waistband in back. They come in several nice summer colors and are sort of light weight. phil4:13, did you hear me chuckle when he handed out the paper? hee hee. I guess you could modify the technique to fit your situation, perhaps having one sit on a towel on the bed or something.
Jules..I watched the video, and had to laugh. I have been doing that for over 5 months, and I just thought I was being lazy and did not want to relace shoes......I also did the same thing with my dw's bra...I thought I was just being lazy and unique
You are always unique Phranque, but lazy is not a word I would use for you. I wasn't brilliant enough to come up with this and thought the caregiver rather clever.
I've always just ripped the sides of Tena briefs, but didn't know how I'd get clean ones on w/o taking slacks off. Briefs w/tabs would work, but I know what would happen w/them. They'd be gone in no time. So now I know the trick. Thanks so much for sharing. Maybe you can copywrite your video. BUT, if I sat on the floor, I'd have a dickens of a time getting up. Maybe hb could pull me up as he stands up. Time to really make the effort to exercise, I guess.
that is one creative lady. ha. wish i would have seen that video back when! yes i th ink if you have a spouse that stiffens up or doesnt want to cooperate it may be harder. this fella is very complacent! but its great to watch. divvi
I wonder if this is something they learn in school? They have been doing this at the nursing home with Lynn since placement over 2 1/2 years ago. His legs are pretty stiff, but it is still easy enough to do. He doesn't walk now, so I see no need to bind his feet in shoes, it is much easier now. Jules, the paper cracked me up, I was chuckling right along with you :)
Thanks, Jules, I will tuck this image away in my mind for future use. For now he can put on his own pull-ups, it's just difficult to get him to agree to do it. I am so happy to report that since I have cut his Aricept back to 1/2 of a 5 mg pill, he is no longer having incontinence issues. Yay!!!!
Thanks, Jules. That is incredible. I have never liked using the diapers and the briefs but changing is already difficult without having to take off the pants and shoes as well. I think it will take me a while to master that.
I don't know if my back and knees could take this, but I would sure like to be able to do it. A few days ago I got a call from the home and they wanted me to come and see if I could get his cooperation to change his "underwear". I did so and it was over with in five minutes, but of course I took the whole business off and had to get clean jeans on him, etc. Yesterday I called to see how things were going and they said that they had succeeded in getting the diaper off, but didn't get a clean one on him. How smart is that? So, I went over there again and I had to bribe him to get him in a dry diaper. I ended up bringing him home with me to take a bath. He has been refusing to take one since last week.
Today I went over there because they had not been successful in changing him. The patient assistant came to the room with me and went ahead and changed him and I was surprised to see her rip the thing down the sides. But, she did not have this technique. I wish they could learn it over there.
