so since i cannot figure out what way i really want to go with the remodeling of the master bath( garden tub out to be replaced by a walk in tub or a large shower area i can help bobby in better) i decided just to take down the shower doors to our shower stall and put up a rod and curtain last night. we shall see how that works today. he has been having so much trouble with the duck down step in (we are both close to 6ft tall) bumping his head or arms on the doors then jumping startled as lot of things do when he feels off balance. any thoughts or ideas that ya'll have done to make it easier. not sure if it was the shower door thing or the stupid exercise ball i bought also that has my back so bad this morning , haha, second cup of coffee and ice pack then on with the day!!!
donnal....I did the same....just removed the shower doors, and installed grab bars...but my dw is only 5'2" so I guess for taller people, you will need a helmet so that he will not hit his head....I thought of remodeling, but thought that it would be permanent, and not something desireable for the future. I now realize that the decision was sound, since she is no longer able to get into a shower......any renovations would have been useless now
Donna I removed the doors, garden tub and make it a walk in with no curtain . Place one lever for water on and one water control always fixed at the right temp. I added a hand held with it's own control, which I keep covered for when I help hubby. This was the best thing I ever did. When I realized we couldn't sell the house in this market I change the bathroom to accomodate our situation.
thanks, yes 5'2" and 6' is a big different, but i used it with bobby this morning with the doors being off and just a shower curtain, it was wonderful. I know i sort of hate to take out the garden tub we rarely use it but our 2yr grandson thinks it is a nice winter pool! so for now, i will see how long we can stay at this stage. remodeling is so... costly and those walk in tub prices ot of this world!!!
I feel the opposite, at least so far, about the doors on the shower. I realize it's difficult if you have to help the person shower, but my spouse is still able to shower by himself and feels more secure with the doors on. When we're traveling or in a home without the doors, he feels less sure of himself and I have to help him get in and out of the tub and stay in the room with him so he will not fall. He doesn't lean on the doors or hold himself up with them, he just feels safer with the doors on.
