Several weeks ago I purchased a motion sensor to place beside my husband’s side of the bed. I sleep with the pager under my pillow and it alerts me as soon as he starts to put his legs over the side of the bed so I can be there to help him to the bathroom. He does alright during the day, but at night he is confused and can’t find the toilet. Now I don’t have to sleep with “one eye open”. It has a 300 foot range so in the morning (he sleeps later than I do) I can go outside and be alerted when he gets up. One more thing that is very helpful and I’m so happy to have it.

Where did you purchase that motion sensor? Sounds like a great thing to have.

This is the one I got--$42.95. Smart Caregiver One-to-One Wander Alarm Motion Sensor from Vitality Medical I know there are others available but this is the one my sister had so I knew it would be what I wanted.

Lori, thanks for the tip. I need one and just ordered it. How does the motion sensor work - batteries or do you have to plug it into the wall? Do you know if you can order an additional sensor? Not much info on the website.

this sounds like a great idea Lori.

You may also want to look into a Baby monitor...I bought one a few months ago, and I can hear every sound in the bedroom...and it is a portable unit that you can take with you anywhere..I bought mine at walmart for 23.00, made by graco. I hightly recommend that too...and if you gently stack pots and pans on the side of the bed, it will awaken everyone in the neighborhood, and you will have plenty of help.....

I purchased the baby monitors that have video and audio-so I can see and hear what goes on in my Dh's bedroom. It works well so I am purchasing extra camera for the unit so I ca use it when he is in another room alone. I just never know what he will do next. His latest is to leave the water running and to fold all the toilet paper into little piles then toss them in the trash. Next he starts on the tissues and he just pulls them out and throws them away!

The sensor I have is battery operated--I think it uses 3 AA's. There is an AC adapter available which I also ordered but do not use.

    Lori,
I've been wondering about something like that. Does it make a loud noise? My DH can get up on his own but goes in the bathroom and creates a mess! Folds TP, but doesn't throw it away....he stacks it everywhere. HAve 2 boxes of TP, Kleenex, napkins, etc...... It would be helpful if I knew he was up and could get him back to bed.

Actually the pager is a bit louder than I would like. It has no volumn control. At night I put it under my pillow. In the morning I get up earlier than my husband so I set the pager on the kitchen counter to alert me. I can hear it in the kitchen or living room. The sound is similar to a doorbell.

Lori, thanks for the tip...we got our monitor and it is exactly what I was looking for. We have a baby monitor but just didn't like it. This is perfect- we've placed it on the top step of the stairs. That way DH can go to the bathroom and not have the monitor go off, but should he decide to go down stairs then we're all on alert. Due to a severe knee injury I am sleeping downstairs, so our aide has the full responsibility of making sure DH isn't trying to escape. He wasn't getting any sleep-waking every 1/2 hour to make sure DH was still in bed. Now everyone's getting a good night's sleep and not worried about not hearing DH should he decide to take a midnight stroll.

BTW, do you know if you can purchase a 2n motion sensor separately?

Opps....finish my post.... I pulled up Motion Sensors topic and noted for you. I have one and it works great! You can sleep knowing that as soon as they get out of bed that you will know.

I was looking back through the recent posts and could not find this thread. Reason: you had just sent it to the top.

I have found the motion sensor to be a lifesaver--I can sleep.

Lori, I agree with the sound. I shove in my pillow as well but still loud. Didn't realize it would go off when you turned it on and about scared myself to death!

I just ordered one of these and read the reviews. One person said she put a piece of masking tape over the speaker part and it muffles the sound some. How far does it reach? I don't need it beside his bed. He still goes to the bathroom ok. I just want to make sure he doesn't go outside or down in the basement. I need to place it at the end of the hallway.

I gotta get one of those. I tried moving her side of the bed up against the wall. That way she will have to climb over me to get out. That works for waking me up, but her motor skills are so poor , she struggles to get herself on to the far side of the bed. I am wondering about our dog setting off the motion detector. He moves around during the night, he moves to the front room and sleeps on the couch, when we goto bed, and once he thinks we are a sleep he comes into the bedroom, sprawls on the floor and then moves under the bed.

Bob-would one of those body pillows keep your wife comfortable and in bed? Walmart has them.

Bob, the dog would set it off if it was near her side of the bed.

Dazed, before DH's recent hospitalization, we kept the sensor on the second to he top stair so it would go off if he got near the stairs going to the first floor. The alarm is kept in the aide's room about 25 feet away and will go off if DH gets near the stairs. Now, we've moved the sensor next to the bed to notify us if DH gets out of bed. The aide brings the alarm down stairs while he makes breakfast and it works when DH gets out of bed upstairs.

It has been a godsend- the aide and I can sleep all night without waking up and checking on DH.
