Over the last month my husband's right little toenail & big toenail have came off. The developed a fungus over the past year. Since the big toenail was still attached by skin, it had to be removed by the Nurse who treats wounds. They both are looking much better with no signs of infection now. Just wondered if any others had experienced this? He is in the late stage of FTD.

My husband developed fungal infection of his toenails, but they didn't come off, just looked as if they would (or should). He also got very dry skin that tore easily and got infected. How are you doing, yourself, Kadee? Are you holding up okay? Giving yourself some treats or breaks so that you can continue? If not, I hope you will. You deserve it.

Mary, Thank you for asking of my well-being. And, the answer is yes I do take breaks, I have an Aide that stays with my husband whenever I have appointments, lunch with a friend or just wanting to leave the house for awhile. She also comes every evening to help put him to bed. He is really no trouble, he sleeps all but about 2-3 hours of the day.
    Again, thank you for asking.

kadee i dont know if the fungal infection has anything to do with the FTD or not. but i know that this can cause a nail to come off. its probably the best thing it does and then regrows a new healthier one. i had a family member who had this big toe thing as well and the dr did remove the nail and allowed it to regrow with meds for the fungus. skin issues are the important concerns when they are bedridden. so it is important to look them over front and back when you get the chance. prevention is key. glad the infection is gone

nice to know you are taking some time for yourself kadee.

Phranque; that is what I do, I look from head to toes while we change and bathe! Just call me eagle eye. I tell my helpers, he is our only patient and his care is priorty number 1, that is why they have this job. I do not require they do housework, just help me pamper and take of him.

Another strange occurrence. Tuesday morning at 4:30 my husband vomited a yellow substance...no food, just this stuff. Next morning, he wouldn't eat or drink. I had the Nurse come from Hospice to check him out, she said, the yellow stuff was stomach acid. His vitals, temperature, chest sounded clear & blood pressure were all fine. He did not eat anything on Tuesday, that evening he spiked a temperature, his jerking was terrible & he sounded congested. The Hospice Nurse came again. This time his blood pressure was high for him, temperature was still high, chest was congested & he had still not drank or ate. I was so afraid he has pneumonia. As she was calling the doctor for meds, I was able to get him to take some Tylenol in applesauce. Now, what is strange, today he has no temp, has been awake for more hours than in months, answered questions correctly...even the Hospice aides(who have been coming since April) were shocked he never really speaks. It was great to see him in such a good mood, but strange after being so ill.

Kadee - a perfect example of how unpredictable this disease is.
