Has anyone heard of a drug called Ketasyn (main ingredient being coconut oil) being an effective treatment for AD? A neighbor dropped by newsletter called "Real Cures" which focused on how a doctor reversed her husband's AD disease in 37 days. Apparently, there is a patent out on this drug and the main ingredient is medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), derived from coconuts. This doctor began mixing coconut oil in her husband's morning oatmeal and she noticed great improvements in his cognitive and physical capabilities as long as he was taking the coconut oil; he regressed immediately if a dose was missed.
Is this just another "snake oil" snow job or is there any credence to it - does anyone know??
I tried the coconut oil, MCT's, and Axona. I saw no improvement in my wife's condition, but it did give her diarrhea, and the Axona caused an upset stomach. Some reports look promising, but it is not a cure.
Go to "search" at top of discussion page and type in MCT. You'll get several threads re this and coconut oil relative to AD by several of our "experienced" members. Can do the same w/coconut oil and may get different threads, but usually they're in same discussions. Would move them to the top (TTT), but there are several and I don't know which would help you the most.
they are running commercials on TV now for it advertising it as the answer for poor memory/cognition. Well, we all know it is about money - get it while you can.
Thanks, Marsh; my husband already has a problem with diarrhea that I'm trying to control (no long term luck yet). Are you the one who gave your wife a particular drug in the NH that stopped her diarrhea in it's tracks? If so, would you mind telling me again what it is and this time I will write it down. I'm not dealing well with this issue, we can't go anywhere without him having accidents that I have to clean up (very embarrassing to me, not him).
My AZ had a very definite decline on both the Axona and coconut oil,really gave me a scare.no diarrhea tho.Have not tried MCT oil,but did but some in powder form,but have been scared to use it.
My husband has had MCT oils (3 tbsp) daily for the past two and a half years. Fortunately his problem was (and still is) constipation. The improvement in his alertness was apparent to friends as well as family. My son was impressed enough that he carried copies of the article in his car to give to people--I think he also gave a few people bottles of MCT oil to try.
My husband remained at this plateau for about two years, but has had a steady decline for the past six months. Would I use it again--absolutely. At least give it a try. It just might work for you too--you never know until you try.
mothert, it looks like Bruce D is the one you were thinking of. My wife has not been in a nursing home - yet. She continued to have some diarrhea after we stopped the Axona, etc. It was finally controlled by reducing the dose of her metformin (for diabetes) from 1000mg twice a day to 500 mg twice a day. Her diabetes is not as well controlled, but is not in a dangerous level.
Yes, thank you, Marsh, Bruce is, indeed, the one I was looking for. If I didn't already have 3 more months of Aricept in our cupboard, I would try him on Exelon patch right away as many of you have suggested it because it doesn't get filtered through the gi tract - sounds like a good bet. However, for now, the Aricept and Citalopram are very effectively controlling his attitude and that is a very important item for me. But, as I said, very soon I'll be trying the Exelon patch. Perhaps I won't have to add another drug to his daily cocktail if the Exelon patch works. Is there any downside to the Cholestyramine?
