My dh is now bedridden. He has been moaning for a couple of years now (even before being bedridden). However, this past few months, he moans constantly at night. I run in to see what is wrong only to find he is asleep and moaning. I reposition but it does not seem to help. Anti anxiety med does not seem to help. There was a thread in 2008 but it got off on a tangent to something else. Any ideas before I go insane?

Any pain from arthritis or wounds?

Since he is bedridden does he moan during day? That would be a clue about stiffness or positioning. A tylenol at bedtime would not hurt, if you have not already tried that. A comfort idea is also a warm pad filled with beans (not sure what they are called) warmed in microwave to apply after a soothing backrub. Also, he may just be dreaming. My DH makes sounds during sleep.

brindle, not sure but isnt your DH on hospice now? since he is bedridden many of the organs begin to slow down and urinating and BM become problematic without the exercise one normally gets. my DH was having issues with grimacing sometimes a while back and hospice brought out a portable xray machine and they took pics and found his kidney on right side enlarged. we treated for it with antibiotics and he was without pain again within a week. i dont think moaning is something thats natural and if it were me i'd have drs order a checkup to see if all is well just to make sure its not something physical. whether treated or not, if they are in pain they need pain medications if nothing else- kidneys, prostate, colon, pancreas are all affected when bedridden and can become inflamed. and it can be painful. just a thought. if you arent on hospice, a dr can still send out a portable lab to do some tests.

I would for sure look at ruling out anything that may be causing him pain but I also agree that he could be dreaming. My DH moans and mumbles in his sleep and I know that during the day he is in pain so it makes sense that during the night he could be in pain too. A pain pill before he goes to bed might help if it is pain. I also know that some medications cause side affects that entail sleep problems.
