My DH was put on this last week and I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with it. DH has no problem eating and has a very good appetite {will eat anything he see's} so lack of food has no bearing on this med being prescribed. It has been 5 1/2 years since dx and he is still able to do all ADL's with prompting which is a blessing for me.
Neurologist prescribed Axona a year or so ago. Within two weeks my DH mind plummeted. went off it and he was back to before he took it. Tried a second time and same thing happened, also happened with coconut oil.I was so hopong they were going to help.Neurontin did the same thing. so I guess we're stuck with aricept and namenda, which really are losing their effect but I am afraid to stop them. Suggestios welcome
My husband had (and still has) a constipation problem, so diarrhea was not a concern for us when we started the coconut oil. Our results were extremely positive. We started in December 2008 when it was first discussed on this forum and have continued for 2 1/2 years now. When our SIL saw him after he had been on it for about two weeks, he comment was that "the vacant look is gone." Several months later several of my husband’s friends approached my son and commented on how much more alert his father had become.
There has been physical deterioration over the past several years but the mental improvement held for about two years. He has declined during the past six months--but I really feel as though we gained several more years.
He has had one tablespoon of MCT oil three times a day. This way he is getting 42 grams of medium chain triglycerides (caprylic/capric acid) a day. I can’t find the information right now, but I think it was determined that a single dose of Axona contained 20 grams of MCT.
I tried using the oil myself but have a diarrhea problem even without it—so no go.
