I have seen time outs and total shunning on other sites. Just wonder how you think about it.
  2.
The site administrators make the rules I guess. They can do whatever. However, I feel if someone is being banned from the site, the other members have a right to know why. It's not always done this way, however.
  3.
This is going to have a lot to do with the type of site you're talking about, but I guess (if it were up to me,) some general courtesies would apply.

I think explanations are correct and should be given. However, there have been cases on forums where I am active in which someone repeatedly violates the stated, sensible rules of conduct, ignores warnings, or comes back and repeats bad behavior after a suspension. In such cases I'd have no problem with a no-explanation ban.

Seems to me it is up to the site administrator and no explanation need be forthcoming. Guidelines are clearly posted under a "sticky" and disrespect and attacks are not allowed.

It would be a shame if banning based on a clash of personalities deprives members of accurate information from knowledgeable sources.

i agree if its a productive debate without hostility then all views should be allowed so members can judge for themselves. as long as rules of engagement are followed in a polite manner i would also question being banned without a reason. then again joan is the website owner and its her call.

    I agree with folly.
  5.
I visit a news opinion website and lurk and I have read the rules and things are pretty basic..energetic discussions are allowed but no swearing, no copyright infringement is allowed and if someone is vulgar then there is an abuse button and if one presses that they have to explain to the mod what the issue is and the mod determines if someone should be banned. Some sites have trolls whose main goal is to cause trouble on some sites.

On facebook they have a way to not see a certain persons message but they can still write messages it is just that you personally have chosen not to read that persons message. I did read the guidelines for this site but I don't remember if they have anything like that here. I personally have not had a problem with anyone on this site.
  6.
    Has someone been banned?
  7.
I am surprised that I have not been banned yet...I certainly tried very hard and failed....But if anyone gets obnoxious, I am very quick to try to squash them and I tend to become overprotective of anyone who gets "abused". Caregiving is hard enough without someone bashing anyone else, and I do tend to get very upset at the instigator..Fortunately, I have only seen a few instances of someone getting out of line, and I am glad to see that personality clashes rarely occur. Also, this is Joan's site, and she has the knowledge and duty to ban those who cannot follow the simple rules of etiquette and courtesy. I, for one, need advice, support, and understanding from this site, not judgement, criticism, or hostility.

    Hi Everyone on Joan's site,

I am the message board monitor. While Joan is having surgery, please refrain from any argument or controversy out of respect for her, and allow her to recuperate without having to worry about the website. She will address all issues when she is well enough. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Huh? Member since Feb., not noticed any arguments! All I have seen is the love, concern and support everyone has for each other. My heart has been sad for all the spouse losses. God Bless those dealing with loss of spouse. Bless us still struggling with this disease and I thank each of you for your kindness. Nellie

I have not seen any nasty or ill tempered messages posted on this site. And the question, if I have it right, is not about this site, it is about chat sites in general. Joan has put out her two restrictions, religion and politics..That is it. Who cares on this thread about politics when we have life and death issues to concern ourselves with, the support we give and get and suggestions. That is why this site works so well and no matter what our religion or political views, we all get along..most families don't get on as well as all of us do here. I am grateful for this site and everyone on it..

I re-read the MBM post and it says "refrain from". Huh? Are we not all adults here? Sorry guess I will be banned but I think that post was totally unnecessary. Guess this is what is termed controversarial. Nellie
  10.
Nellie, I don't quite understand that warning either. We all know, having read the message board guidelines the two topics that are off limits and for good reason, politics and religion. The forum is specific to the needs and cares and concerns of spouses of Alzheimer's patients. I think everyone on the threads has always been respectful of the views of one another. I think the topic is not related to this forum but to forums over all. There are many forums out there in cyber world and depending on the type, there can be flame throwing and warnings to wear your tin foil hat. And the developer of the forum has the right to determine what is not permitted...i.e. swearing, vulgar language, etc..and if one violated it generally a warning is given ( at least on threads I visit now and then) and if disgusting conversations or outright fights bubble up the posters can be banned.

This particular website gets high reviews and marks and everyone here acts like ladies and gentlemen showing respect for one another even when we have differing points of view..

No one here at Joan's place would dream of saying something that would cause her distress while she is undergoing surgery and follow up therapy..we all wish her well and are eager for reports on her successful recovery.

I am so sorry if I said anything to upset anyone on the boards. Everyone is very respectful and does adhere to the guidelines. I wish I could respond to Bluedaze who started the thread and explain the particular situation but I feel it is Joan's place to do so.

Joan just came out of surgery yesterday and will come home today. The doctors feel the surgery went well but she is in a lot of pain. When she is feeling better, in that she will not be able to type for a while, I will ask if I can give you an explaination.

I know Joan feels very close to everyone on the site and does her best to maintain and continually make improvements to it.

    Thanks

    MBM

Nobody did anything wrong here said the spider to the fly.

The original post is about somewhere else which is why it uses the phrase 'on other sites'.

The MBM good naturedly asked us to refrain from being rowdy because Joan is not here knowing we're not a rowdy bunch because she already reads and 'monitors' all the posts which Joan has referred to several times. I think she mentioned Julie but I'm not sure and my memory is failing.

However I simply can't help myself.

No things are known apriori given the id. (waiting)

    Ok, how about this...

Kennedy was shot from the grassy knoll and the warehouse by the cuban mafia. (waiting)

Oh boy. This is harder than I thought

Boo boo was gay and had a thing for yogi. (hint to boo boo - dress up as a pic-a-nic basket)

Ok. Controversy isn't working. I'll try argument.

"I'm coming apart!" "No I'm not." "Yes, I am." "No, I'm not!" "You're an idiot!" "Whose calling themselves an idiot!?!" Wait...I'm getting confused. I'll just go sit in the corner and fantasize about writing a brilliant novel.

    To Bluedaze:

    Because some people are morons.

In an attempt to shed some light, in the past there had been some controversy on this site, but it was dealt with at the time and, in my opinion, doesn't need to be revisited now. I think that no one should have hurt feelings, or read more into the present situation than the first inquiry in which Bluedaze* asked about other sites. I vote that the whole thing be dropped and not be referred to Joan, even after she has recovered and can type, as she surely has enough on her plate. I'm grateful to her that she spends so much time and energy to help us.

Okay, we know Jim B is pulling our leg or maybe he is not a Football fan. Jim, we sometimes need a time out from care giving and giving ol don a little razzing is fun. Besides he invited me to an LSU vs Alabama game and then left me waiting at the gate. We do tend to take our football seriously.
