i have been for the last 2hrs since 3pm back/forth with vet office. my lil chihuahua trixie ate leaves off my hibscus plant at 3 today. grrrrr---- i can see her teeth marks on 3 leaves but only a few bites off each leaf. vet says watch her and see if anything starts up. vomiting and diarreah are coming. well i know all about that so now i may have more poo patrol and DH is off the hook for now..haha

anyone had your animals eat hibiscus? i googled aspca and poison control and its say toxic -vomiting and gastric issues -watch for dehydration...i will be up alot tonite. i gave some benedryl just a bit of childrens she is getting stuffy..she has allergies..she has done this before but not hibiscus..ugh!!
shes resting on my lap for now. i hope she doesnt get bad later..
always something to keep us stressed. !!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew oleanders were toxic but didn't know about hibiscus. What am I doing to my guests when I decorate food platters with the flowers? I always soak them in a tub for a few hours before hand to get rid of ants. A common mistake newbies to the south make is to decorate their tables with fresh flowers. Seat your guests and notice ants all over everything. Hope your little one is ok.

    Oh, dear, poor puppy.

I stopped having any plants indoors, too confusing trying to figure out which might be harmful to my cats. And since I've always had indoor cats, I haven't had to worry about the oleanders in my yard.

Sunshyne for some reason none of my many cats have bothered my many plants. Only exception is spiny tough bromiliads. Don't know why. When one of my boys was dying his last snack was a bromiliad.

I a 6 pound dog and hibiscus - but so far he hasn't shown any interest in them. He doesn't go out alone even tho I have a secure fence - he is neurotic. Wonder where he gets that from. He does have GI problems sometimes and I think it is what my AD LO gives him when I am not looking. They told me to give him 1/4 of a pepcid which seemed to help when he is throwing up. Good luck. I kow you will have an anxious night.
  4.
Watch the poinsettias and rhododendrums too..

PS - Dear Frustraded - I saw your post in February. I had a Cavalier I got in the early 80's in London - she lived 17 years. She was so well behaved, was housebroken when I got her as a little pup and NEVER ever made any mistakes in the house. She was such a dear. I couldn't get another dog for years afterwards because I just couldn't have another dog. Enjoy - they are so darling and so well tempered and devoted.

I gave up having indoor plants. Ones I can grow grow crazy and I hated throwing away handsful of cuttings when I had to cut them back. Only Poinsettia I ever had were gifts, and everytime, no matter how careful, one cat would eat the leaves. Never got sick. Do you know how sad a Poinsettia is when it looks like a miniature maple tree in the winter?, sad grin> Did manage an Ammarylis. Planted in pot per directions. Mounted a tomato cage around it. Wrapped in Net. Flower was the only part above the net. Beautiful!

If only the little darlings were as good at taking meds as they are at eating the bad stuff. . . <sigh>

carosi-here in Florida the amaryllis are in full bloom everywhere you look. My flowers are shoulder high with five dinner plate flowers on each stem. None of us can figure out why the plants are so huge this year. I divide the bulbs every other year (or whenever I remember) and either share them with friends or just plant them in the garden. When I can bear to cut them I give them to very special people. I feel the same about my magnolia blossoms-hate to cut them off the tree but love the fragrance in the house. Much nicer than gardenias.

I just bought a talking dog for $10.00, and got quite a bargain.....He actually listens to my wife...
  7.
Divvi, please update us on your dog. I hope both of you had a good night and that he is okay!

    Frank, cute one! <grin>

update for anyones animal that eats hibuscus! ha. well over all the vet was correct, just minor nausea -. but last nite she did start having breathing issues which did concern me. kept swallowing repeated, and was licking the bedspread constantly. i gave another small dose of benedryl and she settled in but again late i had to hold her infrontof the air purifier to help her breathe. i think the plants toxins were closing her airways some. she is resting and doing ok today it seems. she is only 8in high so i have to cut back all the plants aruond the pool today. hopefully no more of this drama- divvi

Dogs will eat grass or greens when they need to purge something. Could be checking into a safe green you could make available, would be a good idea. Their own little garden patch?

divvi-hope she's ok. Plant some oatgrass seeds for her-might make her happy. Like you-there is very little we won't do for our critters.

Poor baby. I do hope she's alright and isn't having any more breathing problems. I hate it when one of our critters gets sick - would rather it be me.

I do not understand why my Havanese will not eat a different dog food,... but will eat grass?? I told DH that Tigger was p'liking he was a cow..and DH laughed out loud. He never laughs at anything! 'twas a moment!

anything green has cloroform in it..which of course is a sedative. animals use it to soothe their upset tummies...thus grass eating! and my dogs do it reguarly when there is grass or herbs to choose -the grass from the petstore is a good idea. divvi

Divvi, I am so glad he's better today! Hopefully, he'll stick to grass from now on!

Divvi, glad that trixie is better!!! I have two dogs, sisters adopted at the local shelter, and
although they will eat almost anything, they have never eaten indoor plants.
