Copper Ridge is a facility for care and treatment of AD and other dementias located in Maryland. They have a research/educational arm called the Copper Ridge Institute. Recently, I listened to some of the podcasts on their website and found them interesting. In one, Dr. Peter Rabins (author of The 36 Hour Day), mentions that dementia caregivers have TRIPLE the stress of a normal life. No surprise, but that's the first time I'd heard it quantified.

Another thing I learned was that the reason anti-depressant drugs are used for people w/dementia is to help control agitation. I hadn't realized that in a dementia patient, depression presents as agitation, rather than the usual symptoms we see in people without dementia. So please be aware that if agitation is an issue, in addition to the anti-psychotic drugs, your LO can be put on an anti-depressant as well.

Interesting point, because I think I'd rather turn to an anti-depressant first if it came to that.

Emily, I agree--I think half the American population is on them as well! My hb was put on an anti-depressant at dx along with the Aricept. I never asked why, but didn't think he seemed depressed. Now I understand; the anti-psych drugs came later when more anger surfaced. I don't think the anti-depressants have as potentially serious side effects.
