I blame myself of course, because that is a requirement.
The bathroom light in the Holiday Inn Express, Meriden, Connecticut would only operate in conjunction with the very loud bathroom exhaust fan, so I chose to have them both switched off on Friday night. (the evening prior to our collecting our college son to bring him home.) Plus, there were no lights in the room which could be left on that would not cast a horrible compact fluorescent glow, keeping me awake. So, I had them off. Plus, I'd taken cough syrup with codeine which may have made me sleep harder.

So, Jeff had a head start in trying to locate the bathroom at 12:30 am before I woke up to help. By the time I was aware, he had selected a spot right outside the bathroom door, on the mossy-green carpet decorated with pink and brown cinnamon roll swirls, as the perfect spot to let it go.

"You're peeing on the floor," I said hoarsely.
"Oh...sorry," he said. I helped him find the bathroom then, because he said he needed to finish up.

I used a couple of towels, and stepped on it a lot for good measure. No noticeable smell or stain.

I must remember to pack a large night light.

Emily, I will not congratulate you and your DH on achieving this milestone...and forgive me, but your story made me chuckle...guess i can see this happening to us. Wait! Things like this HAVE happened to us...even at home, sad to say.

yep this sounds like the start of a long not too happy relationship once they start 'piddling where they please. the smells dont start til its dried and esp if not shampooed. eeek. watch for it happening at home unfortunately if they cant make it on time it will happen then and there, carpets or floors.
one of those milestones we dont like to cross.

emily--I know there are other products out there, but a while ago I bought a spray bottle of a product called Urine Gone at BBB. Have only needed it a few times, but was glad I had it on hand. One time was down the heat register, I just decided to buy a new cover and put the plexiglass deflectors over the floor ones! I am now trying an every 2 hr bathroom schedule, which seems to be helping. The only times he has done it in odd places so far was when he was not watched closely enough by an aide.

My DH constantly has a little puddle right in front of the toilet! I clean it up and then it reappears later, I clean it up and it reappears(we could do this all day) at least he doesn't let loose completely on the floor, YET!!!

MarilynMD, I had to laugh at HB peeing down the heat register. My mate has done that, and I scrubbed w/vinegar and water, sprinkled soda down when it had dried. Then for good measure sprayed perfume lightly in bathroom. I hadn't realized where he'd done his business until I noticed the smell. Thanks for the suggestion of plexiglass deflector. We built this little retirement house 7 years ago. I'm sooo glad we have hardwood floors for quick and easy clean up. My hb would also go to the corner of the kitchen where the waste basket is not to pee in it, but in front of it. Tonight our son-in-law redid the holes in pocket doors for finger brackets. (Hb had done it years ago, but neglected to alighn them.) Anyway, now I can put a bicycle lock through the holes and keep him out of their at night. Doesn't look nice, but I'm no longer into the house "looking nice." It was there he left water running in sink w/stopper in: water, water everywhere. His little sphere is getting smaller and smaller.

cricket--yes. Others have bought cleaning supplies in pet stores, but I don't have a pet and saw this so I got it. Zibby, don't know if the deflector will make more of a mess--could cause splashing to a larger area; however, I figured it might be easier cleanup than without. Hopefully, it may disguise the register a bit. Just be sure it doesn't cause a tripping hazard.

It seems we've hit one of those interludes where I can almost mark downward trends daily. For the first time I'm SERIOUSLY thinking "daycare or aide?" The time is upon us.

emily, this has nothing to do with this thread, but I remember that you were considering buying a mattress a while ago. Did you get a queen or king size. I was one who recommended a king size. Just curious (nosey!)
  6.
I ordered a queen bed. Having recently slept in a queen on a trip, and a king while picking up our kid from college, I am comfortable with the choice. The king would take up too much space in the bedroom, and the queen feels like the extra elbow room I need.

emily--visit a couple of daycare programs in your area and it will help you decide which is the better option.

Yesterday afternoon, I pushed our queen sized bed to the wall because hb kept falling out, I couldn't get him up, had to call grandson. Last night I gave hb only 1 Temazepam instead of 2 thinking he might not sleep so hard and fall out of bed. Explained it all to him just to hear myself talk. Well, we had our first wetting the bed incident. He didn't get up and wander during the night, though, which was the purpose of the Temazepam--stop the roaming. BUT, there was the laundry and cleaning him up. His legs seem to be stiff and bent in the a.m. Now I'm thinking of moving a twin bed into that room and the queen to the guest room. We haven't slept in same room for about a year because of his being up wandering and getting into things, AND I first moved because he asked me to because "you snore." :) IMO, king beds are too large to mess w/when incontinence is a player. Queens, too, I'm thinking today.

Yes. I'm thinking that incontinence in bed will be the factor that moves me to put him in his own bed.

We will be visiting a local daycare on Monday.
I'm in one of those times when I feel like I can almost see the downstepping...like the clock is just moving faster. Sometimes I think I can "see" inflammation, in the form of fog and tiredness and discomfort which he has no words for.
It is certainly seeming harder for me to get him to comprehend my statements, and I would swear that things which he is uttering are slowly getting more garbled and incoherent. This week he's been going to bed all the time. Like all day. Whenever I don't have an activity for him, I can expect to find him in bed.
