We moved to a new house last week and it has really caused a lot of confusion with DH. He keeps wanting to go back home and when I try to explain this is our home he says no it's your home. I was up most of the night with him trying to leave to go back home. What can I use on the door so he can't open it? Is there some type of an alarm I can get for the doors without having to go to a security system?
There was a discussion on this awhile ago but I can't remember what it was called. In there someone suggested a double deadbolt and it would require a key to get in the house and a key to get out of the house. I hope everything calms down a little and you are able to adjust to the move without a lot of trouble.
Marilyn67, I have an alarm on our apartment door that I got at Radio Shack. It is battery operated and has 2 different alarms - a very loud one that would wake the dead and is continuous, and a quieter, bell alarm that give 4 sounds and then quits. I keep it on the bell since I can hear it anywhere in the apartment, but in a larger house I might go for the loud one.
Marilyn67. I also moved with a AD husband a few years ago and he was very confused and unhappy at first. First of all you can have the keyed locks put on your doors like several here do. I had my son in law install screen door hooks up high on the exterior doors. I devoted the first 2 weeks to my dh and my Mom, because they were both confused - heck I was even confused. I let the unpacking and decorating go until later. I just sat with them and kept them calm. I walked to the bathroom with them etc. My Neuro said moving would be a disaster but we made it. After a few weeks they loved our new home. The biggest problem for them was - finding the bathrooms and when they came out of the bathroom - knowing which way to turn. Do whatever to keep him happy and entertained. Drive him in the car, watch TV with him. etc.
I have keyed double dead-bolts on exterior doors. Haven't found something for the slider on the deck....so, I lock it as usual, and put an expandable curtain rod at the bottom of the door in the place it would slide across. So far, hb hasn't figured out how to get it out or even what's keeping the door closed when he tries to open it, I think. All interior doors have the kind of locks that you push in a button and to open use a small wirey thing to unlock. Bicycle lock on fridge doors. I'm the warden.
Has anyone used the little wedge thing that goes under the door? I bought one to use under motel doors when we travel (which is almost never so I haven't used it yet.) I did put it under the back door here and started to open the door. The siren sounds so loud, it would probably wake everyone in the motel. We are planning a short trip next month. Hope it works as well on motel doors.
Marilyn67, get to the hardware store and buy some of these. They are very easy to install and maybe your DH won't be able to figure out how to operate it if you install while he is not nearby. You could also put it up high so perhaps he would not see it. They work very well.
