Hospice has mentioned a Texas Catheter for my husband. I know nothing about this, other than what I have researched recently. I need opinions..is this something that would be good, something that I myself could change, in general what are your opinions good or bad.
We used them in the hospital for incontinent patients. Better than using indwelling urinary catheters which could lead to UTI (urinary track infections). When secured appropriately it is a blessing that will reduce wet sheets, which not only are a nuisance for you to have to change bed frequently but will prevent bed sores from wet sheets. Once hospice nurse shows you how to securely put the catheter on you should be fine. Hope this helps.

My husband uses a condom catheter when he goes out and at night. He is able to put it on himself and he likes to use it so he doesn't have to hurry to a bathroom. There are many brands available--one trick is to find the kind of condom that works best for you and for him. My husband likes the kind with some adhesive, but he finds the ones with too much adhesive hard to put on. I went to our pharmacy and bought one each of the different models they had for him to try. Some leg bags are also better designed than others--if you get one where the tubing doesn't reliably stay in place try a different brand. You can buy a cleaner for the tubing and leg bag and then reuse them for many months.
Another alternative: http://www.elderstore.com/-afex-incontinence-management-system.aspx Easier to put on than a condom catheter, but it isn't going to work when the person is lying down.
