I know this topic has been addressed with some good ideas, however, I can't find them. At night my husband wets through 2 briefs, with 2 overnight pads from Tena. Sometimes he wets through the Tena Brief & Overnight pad in the day also. Seems like I am always changing his clothing. Any suggestions would be welcome.

If you search incontinence (topic) there is a lot of info about brands, pads, layering, ensuring the "apparatus" is in DOWN position, etc., etc.

I found some discussion groups and ratings on the internet regarding adult incontinence products and also specifically for men. I purchased the Abri Flex from Abena, I got the pull-up type. They also make them with the tape. I then take the Tena Ultra Thin pads and put one of them in the front right on the inner edge of the pull-up. I then put 1 more on each iside. I noticed that some of the wetness came from the top and the side. So, I put on the Abri Flex with the 3 pads, then I have some of the Tranquility Overnight ones left over, that goes over the Abri Flex. Then the PJ bottom. He wakes up around 5 a.m. to go to the bathroom, I know when he gets restless and am ready to go with him. I then take out the inner very wet brief, which leaves him with the outer still dry one and his hopefully dry PJ pants. With two on, I don't have to do much more than tear off the soiled one and we get to bed quickly. Not always foolproof, but so far most of the time he has stayed dry. Those pads seem to help keep his PJ's dry. I tried the ones with the tab, they also leaked out on the top and I could never get them really tight enough.

Kadee--Google "The New Diaper Primer" online. I read about some different pads there (I think Moliform was one) and I sent for a few of those. I can't believe how thick they are--haven't needed to use them yet.

zibby, i think most of us agree the 'apparatus' needs to be in the 'down' postion.. giggle. not up. i bet that was a typo? if its in the up position in the depend its going to miss the thickest part of the pad in the depend and wet the tshirts, pjs and run out over the top of the depend. another area of leaking is the legs. if the apparatus isnt fully down but off to the side-it even makes a difference it will run out the leg openings. i know a bit descriptive here for some of the newbies, but lets talk straight as this changing of bedding and clothing gets to be quite a nuisance. kadee alot of us have found if you use the Tena OVERNITE PAD it has more padding its shaped like a big 8 figure and works better than most. then i use the regular shorter thick tena pad ACROSS the top part of the depend inside running across the tummy. so basically you have a T-Shape padding within the depends. this helps catch it from all sides. nothing is fool proof but the times all this is in place my DH wakes up dry and bedding clothing dry. only very wet pads and of course its a joyous occasion,.,. haha.
i know some have found the moliform pads very thick and absorbant as well. it may be worth a try to ask for some samples. in my experience its more about how the depends fits to help curtail leakage. if its too big it defeats the purpose around the leg openings, you may try cutting the bottom of the pad ( i think briegull does this( to allow the urine to soak thru the pad into the depend after it reaches capacity.
hope you find something that helps!

Divvi--I think your point about slashing the bottom of booster pads to allow urine to flow through into the diaper is discussed in The New Diaper Primer too. Apparently, if you don't cut through any of the boosters, when their absorbancy beyond its capacity the urine can leak out because it flows sideways, not into the diaper. So can defeat the purpose layering more than one product.

Yes I do make about six slashes with a utility knife on the bottom of the Tena overnights before I take the paper off and expose the adhesive. I put it as high up in the front as it will go or I will have a little surprise peeking out in the morning! I've pretty much given up on bottoms except when it's very cold. Just the super big pads on top of quilted pads and a lightweight throw on top which goes in the laundry frequently and then a blankest on top of that after he's asleep. But he sleeps on his back and doesn't toss. Thanks, Trazadone.

I will try slashes in the Tena Overnight pad. It does seem the bottom layer is never wet. He is always wet in the back of his pants & shirt never the front. Tonight, I tried putting an Overnight pad high in the back & 1 high in the front.

    Kadee.
My dh is incontenent and has a prostate issue so pees a great deal. It took a lot of research and trial and error but I found that Moliforms work for us. They are a very thick pad that goes inside of an inexpensive pull up (I use the Depends Ajustable). There are 4 different thicknesses. I use the purple one for nighttime as it hold 60 ozs. of liquid. Also I found that if I take a cheap pad and open it and tuck it on each side of his hip at night, that takes the overflow really well especially when he sleeps on his side. I tried the liners and put holes into them as well but it did not work well for us. My source is Adult Diapers at Magic Medical. I have to buy by the case but that includes the shipping and I generally receive them in a day or two. I know how frustrating it gets when they wet through their clothing during the day. I don't even bother with pajamas at night - just more to get wet - disposables and a T-shirt. As for bed pads, we use a combination of WalMart brand and Medline (also from the same source and they also make the insert pads). We all keep trying to find solutions. Sometimes they work and other times it is a crap shoot. Good luck. You will find something that works for you.

Brindle, I still haven't figured out why my husband is wet on the back. I put pads accross the front and on the side of the hip. He usually sleeps on his back, however, he most often gets wet on the back and around the side. This usually happens around 5 a.m. I'd like to try the Moliforms. I also tried very huge diapers with tape, they all seem to leak out. I wish the manufacturers would put that into consideration. How much padding do you you around the hip?

Thanks for the edit, Divvi:) I'd hate to cause more of a mess than someone's in!

We're not at the stage that you gals describe here, and I hope we don't get there. WORK WORK WORK You can bet I'll be here re-reading if/when we do. Thanks for all your experience. I hear your quiet "yer welcomes" now:)

I am so frustrated. I still cannot keep my husband from wetting through to his clothing & bed. Hospice brought big diaper like briefs, I put the Moliform in, plus an overnight Tena guard, he is still soaking wet. Any other suggestions?

kadee i would try using a pair of the plastic diaper cover pants (mine are sanipants brand but any would do) that you can get from a medical supply. i used them when i took DH out with me during the day and usually it would contain the urine til i got home to change. use the overnight pad down between legs and one across the stomach inside the diaper then cover with the plastic pants. its all i know to suggest other than making sure during the night if you get up that his appartatus is pointing DOWN into the pad. i know sometimes these guys can 'adjust' the apparatus during the night and it may be pointing the wrong way to contain urine. in out case it was why the bed and shirt was soaking in the morning. it is very frustrating!!! i always cover even today his belly with an absorbant towel before bedtime. this way if he does pee 'up' it usually catches the urine in the towel before running into the bedding.

Divvi, Good idea about the towel, I will try that tonight. I just hate for him to always be wet. I always make sure the apparatus is down & I don't think he adjust after. He does wiggle around a lot in bed.

    Kadee,
I use the Tena overnight pad between the legs, point the apparatus down and use two heavy full absorbent pads at the top of the overnight pad, I put one of the full absorbent tena pads starting at the top of the overnight pad across the stomach area at the bend of the legs, I put one on each side. Even with the apparatus pointed down it is always at the side when I get him up each morning. This may not completely protect him but it only at times goes onto the bed padding and never on the sheets. I don't have to change the complete bedding until it is normal time.

I am so so so grateful that I do not have this problem....I am using the depends ladies panties (the dainty PAINty) (emphasis on pain...mine), and they work so well.....In the past month, they have been wet only twice, but held up to their END of the bargain (pun intended). I bought a kiddie pool for her to sleep in to protect the bed, but so far I have not had to empty it....I am so so blessed!!!!! I am indeed the PeeKing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After a lot of experimentation with different products I have found no way to keep the bed dry at night. But now that it is warm at least dh is sleeping in Depends only: no pjs to wash every day.
I do have to wash the bottom sheet almost every day; my solution: I bought the thinnest sheets I could find which have the advantage of being very cheap, a lot of them fit in the washer, and they dry in no time. I bought them for about 1.50 apiece at IKEA |(I think it was a sale.) Under the sheet of course a disposable pad, usually two.
ANother tip: I cheat a bit by turning the plastic side of the waterproof matress cover up (rather than the fluffy side). This means that after disposing the disposable pad I can just wipe off the mattress cover rather than washing it every day (it is very hard to dry unless you can hang it outdoors).

JeanetteB, thanks for the tip on turning the mattress pad plastic side up. I don’t have the problem……YET. But when I do I hope I remember that!

I have an "incontinence pad" on top of the bottom sheet. On the nights she wets through the night-time underwear, only the pad is wet, so that is all I have to wash. In addition, I have a plastic cover over the mattress in case the pad doesn't work, but so far it has worked fine.

Since L. Went to the nursing home and after they took out the catheter the hospital had inserted, they leave him with NOTHING on his lower half, just sheet and a quilted pad below. I think it's to prevent bed sores. If they get him up into a Geri chair which is not every day since they want his hip to heal, they do put on a depends.

Just had a thought. If you don't point the penis downward the urine goes whereever it points. You can put some pads on either side of your dh at night. This takes care of the sides when he turns at night. What kind of bed pads are you using? Many just hold the liquid and it puddles which makes everything including your dh wet!
I found that the purple moliforms need a little work to get them right because they are so large. I generally fold them a little in the middle and make sure they are in the crease of the legs (maybe that is why your dh is wet on the bottom). I use the Depends Adjustables for the outside and have also tried the Attends diapers with the moliforms inside. I use the lighter weight moliforms during the daytime because I change dh about every two hrs.
My neighbor a nurse at the local hospital said they just use the Moliform pads (largest ones they have) on the beds in the ER rather than using diapers. My dh moves too much for this. However, I did buy some of those pads and really liked them. They are pricey. I use the smaller ones although they are still expensive, at night.

    Hope this helps.

if you have tried all these tips and DH is still getting very wet at night, it may be his urine flow is just more than normal and you probably need to change him at miminum once during the night to keep him dryer. if they tend to pee more than a time or two during the wee hrs the pads no matter how thick probably wont hold it all and it has nowhere to go but out. and yes if the apparatus isnt down INTO the thickest part of the pads it just wont work as much. sometimes i have found no matter how many times you 'adjust' it down again its up in the morning. this is way beyond my expertise.. :)

It is a little easier to keep the p0adding and pants in place when you are using diapers, but My DH is up too many times so he has to wear the pull ups. Then when he gets up he never gets them pulled back up right so you has to go readjust -that gets real old after the 15th time in an hour!!! And even with getting up an going to pee-he is still wet 2-3 times a night.Sometimes wet all over!!!
