I just went to pick up dh's rx for Namenda and about had a stroke on the spot. Wow! What is this stuff, anyway, solid gold? I talked his pharmacist into just giving me half for now because if he can't take it, then I'm stuck with these golden pills for nothing. So, I am wondering when this drug's patent ends and will go generic. Does anyone have any insight into this??

The earliest namenda can go generic is April 2015.The company's patent on the drug doesn't expire until then.

In searching the web, I discovered that generics are available, just not here. Canada has them, but they are still very expensive. I found a company from India who has reasonable prices on this drug. I checked it out and it has FDA approval and zero complaints. India is coming on strong in the pharmaceutical industry and I feel pretty comfy buying from them. In fact, I think maybe that's where dh's aricept is coming from now (I'll have to check). Thank goodness for the internet so we can shop around.

Do you have any kind of insurance? Sid is on my insurance for his 'secondary', and I use them for his drugs. He takes two Namenda a day - my price is $50 for a three month supply.

Wow! That is really good. We do not have Part D because it didn't seem to offer me anything better than Canadian drugs. However, Namenda is a different deal. Also, we have AARP supplemental and that does cut it down from most others, but still around $150/month. These drugs are dynamite. Did you see a big difference with Namenda?

We have AARP Part D and our cost for namenda is $42 a month, until we hit the donut hole, that is.

    mothert,

I can't really answer about seeing a difference with Namenda. Sid was initially misdiagnosed and placed on the wrong medication when we were in Massachusetts. When we moved down here, and he was diagnosed with AD, he was put on Aricept. I would say there was a definite stabilization when he went on the Aricept. He was put on Namenda a few months later - his memory seemed to be stable for at least a year or more. Neither medication did anything for the ensuing rages. Only Risperdal calmed those.

Sid has been on Namenda and Aricept now for 4 1/2 years. I would say that within the last 6 months, he's really gone downhill. Would he be worse without the medication? I don't know.

Have you tried Costco for the Namenda? I know they have really good prices, but I don't know if they carry the Alzheimer drugs.

We've been off Namenda for several weeks now - my husband is bedridden.. I see no change except that his speech got a little better for a few days. He sometimes sleeps more during the day. He'd been on for four years.
