Has anyone come across this form of torcher, my DH has been suffering from bladder pain and having to use the toilet every 1/2 hour or so, for several months. This week we spent three days in hospital where he had a cyscopy to eliminate anything " nasty " and he was diagnosed with an Over Active Bladder. This condition is making his life miserable, and the medication he was given doesn't seem to be making any difference. The staff at the NH get upset at always taking him to the toilet, he has to be taken as he's blind and also can't remember where to find it.I would appreciate any replies as to this upsetting problem.
sulvia, many men suffer from enlarged prostates and overactive bladder. my DH has had it for a long tme too. we went thru all the painful tests and found that DH suffered from 'spasm' type episodes which caused the constant sensation that he needed to void. this disease seems to destroy the connections from brain to bladder and or sphincter muscles at sme point thus they can become incontinent both ways. there are a few meds out there that work to curtail the overactive bladder and they do work but sometimes you may have to give it a few wks to kick in. if it doesnt seem to help then contact the dr and maybe another one would work better than others. i did find that there can be a side effect of some bladder meds that they can tend to drop blood pressure upon standing medical term is syncope, so have them watch for this just in case. the last med we used was something new called Gelnique, which supposededly by passes the brain so this drop in pressure didnt happen. its a new drug on the market now. i hope your med helps him some, i know how desperate they can appear with always having the sensations. poor dears. its tiring to you both. i would not worry about the NH staff. thats what they get paid for. let them know hes trying a new med and until you get its effects ironed out they will have to bear with him. if the meds start working he should get some relief. this disease causes very strange things to happen within the brain and body. i hope he sees improvement. divvi
sylvia, my husband also has the sensation to urinate several times a day - perhaps every hour or when he sees someone getting up to go to the bathroom. I took him to a urologist who determined there is nothing physically wrong with his bladder or prostate. He said he thought the problem was caused by DH's illness and the psychotropic drugs he's taking to manage his behaviors. He did not prescribe any medication to manage the condition because there's nothing physically causing it. It is frustrating and annoying however, because whenever we go out we always need to make several trips to the bathroom. Makes long distance travel impossible.
Thanks Divvi and LFL for your comments, DH was prescribed Ditropan and when I went to see him yesterday, he did seem a little better. He only had to go to the toilet twice in the two hours I was there, which was certainly an improvement and he seemed happier in himself. I went away happier myself, so hopefully he will be the same when I go tomorrow, if he's happy then my peace of mind is somewhat better. It will take a long time to get over having to place him in a NH, and having to make excuses as to why he can't come home, what can you say ?
