DH is not responding to Seroquel as well as I had hoped. He was getting it twice a day and now the Dr. has increased to 3 times but he is still showing agitation and not resting well. Anyone had any experience with an alternative? TKS!
My husband was having agitation/anger issues. I asked his Dr. about Seroquel and his response was... Seroquel is more for hallucinations and Risperial is more for anger/ agitation.
My husband is 55 diagnosed with EOAD and is one of those who is aware. When he took the Risperidal he said very shortly after he felt a calm.....and it makes him tired.
He is now taking both but said he doesn't really FEEL anything when he takes the Seroquel but it is working.
When my DH had to have a med change , we tried Zeprexia--may as well have been water. Next tried Seroquel--put him to sleep from dose to sdose. Next came Reperdal--worked like a dream except he developed joinnt pain--shoulders, hips and knees--Dr. said side effects. Finally went to Geodon--a limited dose. Works. Now, with decline, he was sundowning so bad and up most of the night, I asked for help. This time Seroquel XR has nullified the sundowning completely and cut the stress100%. He has his nights and days reversed but we can deal with that.
Dr. increased Seroquel dosage to 3 times daily beginning 3 days ago. Now DH has trouble sleeping. He is sure someone is trying to kill him. He wears himself out talking about the person that is trying to kill him, sometimes asking me if I am going to kill him. He is exhausted. I'm trying to contact doctor now. I'm afraid this is caused by the drug.
RISPERDONE WORKED WELL FOR MY DH FOR AGITATION. HE ALSO SLEEPS WELL. HE DOESNT TAKE IT WILLINGLY, I TOLD HIM IT WAS FOR HIS CHOLESTEROL. YOU DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET BY.
Update on the Seroquel. DH seems to have adjusted to it and is sleeping much better. Due to a swallowing problem he has been put on pureed food, water the only liquid..no coffee. When I asked why no coffee, I was informed that he might aspirate this into his lungs...OK...I know that is not ideal, but we're also giving him a drug which is NOT for the elderly, not meant for people with dementia, and has a black box warning by the FDA. So, is coffee a really big problem if its one of the pleasures of his life? I'm asking this tomorrow when the doctor visits!!
My husband has been on Seroquel for a couple of years now. The dosage and frequency has changed multiple times. It has changed 3 times in the last month. I didn't think it was working early on but the disease was progressing faster than the medication could keep up with. Once hospice was involved, they were able to get the right dosage and get him stabilized. A month ago, he was on 50mil in the morning and at 3:00 and then 100 mil at night. Then it went to 25-25 and 100. Now it is just 100 mil at night. The doctor has backed off of the dosage because he has been sleeping too much and has become a fall risk.
