I'm not sleeping well at night. Have trouble going to sleep and wake up around 3:00 AM and can't go back to sleep. Someone mentioned a combination of melatonin and magnesium. I can't find the thread and can't find this at the drugstore. Is it a supplement you can buy over the counter or a prescription? I'm trying not to take sleeping pills.
Also, I would remove all caffeine from your diet. If you consume it regularly you probably need to ween off to avoid some vicious headaches. If there is anyway you can manage it, try to get 45 minutes of brisk exercise a day... I've found these 2 lifestyle choices to really aid in a good night's sleep.
I looked at Walgreens, bluedaze, and didn't find either one. Maybe I didn't look in the right place. I'll ask someone or I'll try Wal-Mart. mary22033, I hadn't thought about lack of exercise causing the problem, but I think you may have hit it. DH and I used to exercise 3 times a week at the fitness center. As he has progressed into late stage 5 and early 6, he gets so tired out and I have to do so much more for him that we let our membership drop. I do stay busy but I know it's not the same as getting out and walking or working out. I'm not sure how to work it in because I'm not comfortable leaving him alone anymore. Caffeine is probably not a problem. I only have one cup of coffee in the morning and drink decaf iced tea with lunch and dinner. Only water in between meals.
Oh my gosh, Kadee! I hadn't thought about chocolate. I have chocolate in some form every night after supper and it does have caffeine, doesn't it? I NEED my chocolate. It helps me cope but guess I need my sleep even more. Oh darn!
Dazed, I have had good luck with some pills I’ve purchased at Walmart. They are called Sleep Aids. They are little blue pills & you are supposed to take 2, but I usually only take one. I haven’t taken any recently because I don’t want to not wake up if he wakes up during the night.
Dazed, Melatonin is with the vitamins at our Walgreen's. DH and I each take 6 mg a night. My doctor said it was okay to go up to 10 mg if I needed it. The 6 mg works most of the time, but not every night.
Luyties Homeopathic Co. makes a couple combinations to help with sleeping, also for depression and anxioty. They are little pills you put under your tongue,my old dr. recommended them years ago. I also get pills for incontinence that I give my dog, they work when nothing from the vet worked. You cna get a catalogue, their number is 1-800-homeopathy.It's too bad there are not any homeopathic doctors around anymore.
Dazed, I know getting "out" to exercise is tough for many. How about an exercise DVD that you can play on the TV? There are so many, at every level - beginner, on up. Your DH might even join in. Or he might resent your ignoring him, for the TV... but it's worth a try. My guess is you could find many dirt cheap on Ebay.
I found the melatonin. Just need to know when to take it....right before bedtime or a couple of hours before? I didn't get the magnesium. I take Centrum Silver for women and it has 50 mg of magnesium so I wondered if more would be too much. Couldn't find the sleep aid. I do have the "Dancing Grannies" exercise video and also Leslie Sansone's 1, 2 and 3 mile walking video. They've been packed away somewhere but I think I can find them. I appreciate all your suggestions and will try them all. Doing without chocolate will be the hardest. Just finished a hot fudge cake at Buddy's Barbeque. Yes, I need to lose a few pounds....well, more than a few, but every time DH declines a few more points, I seem to need more comfort food.
I find I can get to sleep well enough but I guess things just keep running around in my head as I wake up at 2 then4 and finally give up and get up at 6.
