thanks for this information. I am having to start keeping emergency items for my dh. I will look at these and see if we can use them. Hope you have a great day.....
Thanks for the info. We haven't needed any of this sort of stuff; however, this a.m. I found his wet slacks left waded up in one spot and wet socks in another (he sleeps w/all clothes on, including belt). Bed wasn't wet; so guess he had a problem getting to the bathroom. This aft we came home from town and he *smelled.* I said, "It smells like you might have filled your britches." "Yes." He went immediately into the bathroom and was there awhile. When he came out, I checked. Yup he had and cleaned himself and filled the toilet w/paper and wrapped one piece of evidence and left it on the counter??????
So, I think it's time to start. I have no idea what size or if I can start w/pads altho' I've read MANY threads and comments about this. Guess I'd better go back and re-read w/interest now.
Zibby, My awaking moment was when my husband pooped in the garage. The next day from advice from divvi and others I purchased the Tena Brand briefs. He wasn't really incontinent for some time later, however, I didn't want him to be embarrassed if he had an accident out somewhere. I have tried Depends, however, I like the Tena brand best, they are softer & look more like underwear. I have hit all 4 Walgreen's in Kokomo this week. I will be checking again tomorrow to see if they have re-stocked. $5.00 off each package is a great savings.
I have been ordering the Tena briefs 8 packages at a time from the internet for $127.00 plus free shipping. There's either 16 or 18 to a package. The thing I notice most is with Depends if he even dribbles a little which he tends to do, they smell immediately. The Tena ones never smell bad. And they fit nice and don't make a nasty elastic rash on his legs. Zibby, don't bother with pads unless you want to fish them out of the toilet all the time.
Thanks for the continuing info. I bought 1 pkg of Tena briefs w/coupon I printed from Kadee's info because I hadn't yet decided whether pads or briefs would be best (My Walgreens had no pads today). Thanks, Jules, you have a valid point; I don't want to fish for pads or find them behind a door or in a closet someplace. Now about flushable wipes....we have a septic tank. Are flushable wipes safe for that system? I'm printing another coupon now and will be shopping for more briefs tomorrow to "lay by in store."
is the coupon only for briefs or pads too? i need the overnight pads, briefs dont work fo rus anymore! i use the tena overnite pad in the mens depends brand. great for us.
It's for 30-42 pack pads and/or 16 pack underwear. Local store had pkgs w/16 marked out on and 18 replacing it. Excludes slender, driactive and extra plus pads. I didn't find coupon in local flier, but went to walgreens.com clicked on sale or weekly flier, not sure which, then put Tena in the search area, entered and a coupon came up. Limit 3 except in ID or NM. Sale is Sun 2/20 thru Sat 2/26. Printed it and away I went. Printed 2 more tonight and will get a couple more pkgs (if they have them) tomorrow. Our Walgreen's isn't very large.
Amazon has all kinds of pads etc from Tena - no idea there were so many. Free shipping and you can set up recurring shipments. I'm not sure about the prices - someone check...
Zibby--I would call some septic service cos. in your area and ask about the flushable wipes. I was told a few yrs ago by a service co. that one wipe (perhaps she meant regular ones) could clog a septic system. Better to be safe than sorry.
the other day our tub got completely clogged. I had Andrew fish down it with the snake. Up came a wipe. This wasn't the toilet, of course, but it was none the worse for wear!! Don't know how the filter got dislodged.
Reading through some old posts here about Depends, Tena underwear, etc. since we are now at that stage. Answering a question from way back in 2011 about wipes and septic tank. The company who pumped our septic tank told me that nothing should go into the toilet except pee, poop and septic safe toilet paper. Could someone help me with the best overnight protection? Sometimes I'm having to change bedding even when using overnight briefs.
dazed the tena brand if you can still find them or the mens depends worked for me. but with 2 pads inside. one the regular long way and then another ACROSS the belly inside the brief like a T shape. if it was really bad then I put the sani plastic pants over it all and had him ontop of cotton bed liners and throw aways. you can never have enough protection. especially if they tend to use their hands... :)
Divvi, do you have any idea how valuable your advice is to us here? Yes, I'll try the trick with the pads. Also someone posted some time ago about a brief that would hold many ounces but I can't find that post.
believe it was marshs post that held a lot of urine overnight. I will see if I can find that. thanks dazed. hope it gives some help. believe me, we use whats tried and true and it takes many many times to find what works!
read he mentioned the tranquility premium overnite brand from alzheimers store. oh dazed make sure the 'apparatus' is pointed down when you get him into depends of your choice. :) obvious reasoning! lots of suggestions on the incontinence thread but long!
Can you bring up the incontinence thread for me, Divvi? Don't care if it's long. I need to read it again. I'll check the Alzheimer's on-line store for the tranquility premium overnite briefs. I sure don't want to keep having to wash linens, blankets and pads every morning. This is all new to me. He's OK during the day and tells me when he needs to go but he is sleeping longer and apparently sounder/deeper during the night and doesn't wake up. Good part of this is that I can get a better night's sleep.
Dazed, we've tried everything with moderate success. He seems to prefer the depend real fit for men, but they do leak if he's had a lot to drink during the day. He has torn apart tranquility premium and the tena. If we put a pad in the depend at night he tears the pad out and the brief off. So I guess we could use some advice too because changing sheets, pads, blankets, quilts every day.
Dazed, do you have any of the washable or disposable pads? (Also called chuks/chux) They were a life saver for me in not having to change the whole bed. Best of luck ((hugs))
Nikki, I do have two pads. One goes in the wash and I put the other one under the clean sheet. When he wets, he really wets and it goes beyond the pad. Maybe I should use both every night. I'm sure they also make larger ones. Yes, I made sure the equipment was pointed down but it must have went sideways. LOL He sleeps on his side and the whole side of him was wet. Do the larger sizes have more padding? He's rather small and I get the small/medium. I could try the larger ones but they may leak worse if they don't fit well. Where else could we go but here to talk about things like this with people who understand and will try to help? LFL, sounds like you're having the same problems. I really feel the isolation today.
LFL, I wish I had some wisdom on this to share with you. I never could get Lynn to keep one on at home. That is why I bought a bunch of the protection pads ( the large quilted ones like they use in the hospitals) It at least saved me from having to change the bottom sheets and protected the mattress. Once he was in the nursing home they insisted he wear them... good luck with that! lol. At any rate, he finally did start to wear the depends that were more like underwear. I am guessing the others just felt foreign and probably bulky on him.
Dazed, if you are asking if you should get a larger diaper, I wouldn't suggest it. In my experience if they are too big for them then there is more leakage. Not one of the more pleasant aspects of this damn disease is it! But, I am smiling as I fondly remember our dear Divvi being crowned "poop queen" :)
We use the Tena brand Mens. They are very very absorbent, don't smell, and have a back like a catcher's mitt for superior containment. Here is a link: http://www.tena.us/men-protective-underwear-superplus-absorbency/8178081920,en_US,pd.html#start=1
Be sure to get the ones that have the grey stripes on the top. The product is so soft like it could be fabric. I have during extreme times torn the pad part from the band and added it inside the brief he was wearing successfully containing major events.
My DH would take off his Depends (or the several different brands that Hospice provided) and wet or mess the bed. I had the washable bed protector pads and also lots of Chux. They didn't really do any good, because he was so restless and agitated at night that he would wiggle around scrunching them up and ending up messing the bottom sheet anyway. I pretty much washed bed linens every single day. You should have seen the water bill. The next step probably would have been to try those pajamas that are one-piece and close up the back so the patient can't take them off. I didn't try them because they just looked like too much work to get him in and out of them--he was not cooperative with care, and even changing Depends was difficult because he fought it all the time. Even with a wet or soiled Depends, he would get irritable and un-cooperative, insisting that he was not wet or soiled, and how dare I suggest that he was. Sigh. The bad old days.
I've had my DH in Depends (and other brands) since last March. I started using them mostly because he wasn't very good at cleaning himself after a bowel movement. Then in August he started being incontinent of urine during the night. It really escalated and I also have the bed wrapped up in any protective covering I can think of: Chux, two waterproof pads, then fitted sheet, then another waterproof pad which tucks under the mattress on both sides.
But I also began to suspect that he might have some type of internal infection -- he periodically looks really flushed, but no fever or elevated blood pressure, and also appeared to have a rash on his chest. It reminded me of when my daughter had scarlet fever as a toddler and the doctor said it was a strep infection left untreated. (Talk about feeling like a bad mom!) So off we went to the doctor and sure enough, he had a strep infection. He was on Amoxicillin (the bubble gum flavored liquid) for ten days and the overnight incontinence has stopped. I think that sometimes he's wetting when I'm showering in the morning, since he's waiting for me to finish, plus he doesn't remember we have another bathroom he can use just down the hall (which is ok since if he flushes when I'm in the shower, I'll be scalded!).
So, even if the urinary incontinence has become the norm, I think if it's excessive it doesn't hurt to check for a UTI. Good luck to all on the pee and poop patrols!
Well, I'm trying the Tena super plus again for night time wear...hopefully he will keep them on all night (fingers crossed). Nikki, I have several of the quilted reuseable pads like they have in hospitals but he's so restless at night they get wet too. I have multiple layers under the bottom sheet including a plastic shower curtain liner (I think it was Vicki that recommended that) so the mattress doesn't get wet. It's always a challenge.
Like Elizabeth's* husband, he just is so restless and agitated that everything gets wet. I just had the rugs cleaned and you guessed it, I caught him standing by the bed and peeing on the floor. No rest for the weary.
UPDATE: Used the tena 2 nights ago and they held a lot and only the top pad was damp. And he didn't pull them off...yet.
On all these products look to make sure they are latex free. Tena products have that label on the packages. I read all labels now since I discovered while wearing "rubber gloves" that the ones with latex made me break out and itch nearly to insanity. Watch on anything adheaive as well.
