DH has had this for about 3 years; went through PT, wouldn't do the exercises at home though. Hasn't bothered him much since until the last couple of weeks. He fell in Dec. and he may have hurt it again then. He's 87 - not doing operation. Other than ice/heat - any suggestions? Tylenol isn't working. Cortisone shot? He has doctor's appt. next Monday, and will see what the DR. suggests, if anything. But he is in a lot of pain, especially at night.

Vickie, I have a rotator cuff tear in my right arm. The doctor who checked it out didn't give me a good outcome for surgery due to an arthritic neck that affects the arm so I declined to have it. He did give me an injection that helped for awhile. I just live with it and try to make moves slowly and careful about how I raise the arm over my head. If it gets to painful I'll get another shot. Couple that with a bad back and it can be a painful day. I did have surgery on the neck 20 something years ago and back surgery about 10 years ago. It's heck to get old...... I do have pain pills but I don't like to take them and yes, aches and pain do keep you from sleeping. I try to get by with 2 Tylenol and a zanax at night with the heating pad for the back. If I can get relaxed I can sleep most of the time. The Cortisone may help and thet can give it to him ever so often. Good luck....

Resting that arm on a pillow for support at night helps me (recommended by phsyio.). Ice bag good, too; pillow the best.

    Bama,
Ask your Dr. about taking Trazadone at night. It is a antidepressant used for chronic pain. I have been using it for quite a while and you can adjust the dosage to suit your pain levels. I too have arthritis throughout my back, knees etc.... Will see a neurosurgeon in a couple weeks about the latest problems. But the Trazadone gets me some sleep without feeling drugged.

    Vickie,
The ice/heat might help and slinging his arm or wrapping it to him at night might help.
