I just drove home with the radio tuned to NPR, briefly listening to Buzz Bissinger (columnist, blogger--The Daily Beast,) ranting about why football needs to stay violent.
Ok, ok...I'm not going to argue with his premise. I've never enjoyed football in particular, and am not likely to start.

But here's what really got my attention:
He was poo-pooing the notion that the rules should be changed such that tackles would be less impactful and go for legs instead, and he said (I'm paraphrasing, as I don't have a transcript):

"Do you know how many more cases of arthritis that would cause? Sure, Alzheimer's is terrible, but take the case of [some player whose name I didn't catch.] He walks with two canes now! Which is worse?" (clearly, from his delivery, Buzz thought the 2 canes were worse than AD.)

I snapped back at the radio: "What did you say? Are you kidding me? Are you a complete idiot?"

I suppose it's his schtick to be a bombastic media personality...but what a concept! He'd rather have Alzheimer's than have arthritis.

Interesting. Did you know that I have written to NPR countless times to try to raise awareness of AD, and to ask them to do a program on it. All I have gotten is a "thank you we'll consider it" answer. Guess they didn't consider it worth their time.

That's a transcript of the NPR interview. Yep, he pretty much said that.
Earl Campbell of the Houston Oilers is the guy who now walks with 2 canes.

I wonder which Earl Campbell would prefer.

Well, my DH has both and if I could choose between the two, it would most certainly be to have his mind back. There are lots of ways to deal with pain but nothing we can do to help the AD.
