Ever sense the doctor took my hb off Aricept when he talks nothing he says makes sense, and he mumbles alot?? I have to keep asking him what did you say, or try to figure out what he means??? Also he talks to people that aren't there? Also sees things and people who aren't there also. And he paces and touches and moves everything in the house. Is all of these things that are happening from the Alzheimers and the stage that he is in?? If so what stage would you say it is??? He needs watched now all day long, and thru the night because he is up every 2 hours, and gets into things. I am getting real tired, don't get much rest. Gotta run he is waking up from a nap, so I'll be checking in when I can, Thanks everyone for their suggetions!!!! Have A Nice Day!
The mumbling and not making sense is part of the Alzheimer's that has affected the language portion of his brain. However, the seeing things and people and talking to people who are not there, may be indicative of Lewy Bodies Dementia. It's still dementia, just a slightly different type than Alzheimer's. Hallucinations of the type you describe are very common in Lewy Bodies Dementia. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lewy-body-dementia/DS00795/DSECTION=symptoms
Did you ask the doctor why he took him off of Aricept? It may be best if you explain all of these symptoms to the doctor and have your husband evaluated further.
Why did the doctor take your husband of aricept? Where there side effects he couldn't handle? My husband has been on aricept since August 2008 and at his last neurologist appointment I asked about stopping the aricept. He said that if I wasn't having financial problems paying for it, he suggested keeping him on it. He had a patient who they stopped aricept with due to cost and he lost his ability to speak overnight. So maybe the aricept was helping your husband with his cognition. Talk to his doctor.
Took my DH off Aricept after 7 years; and Namenda after 6 yrs. Have seen no further decline in 6 months. I do believe they slow down the decline for a period of time, then the effectiveness stops.
I have put off starting my DH on Aricept. He is only on Namenda. The reason I did this is, before dx and meds he was a bear to live with. Evil looks, say mean things and hateful to me. Now that he is on the Namenda he is kind and very easy to live with (like he was years ago). I don't want to rock the boat. Am I doing the right thing. I know nothing will make him better and he seems happy and is doing well for where we are at. I just feel for us right now the Namenda is all we need. Our doctor is going along with my wishes right now.
Blue, I agree with you, why rock the boat. I am really surprised the doctor wanted to change things, if your husband is doing so well. Especially, with Aricept. I am so glad that the Namenda has worked so well.
blue - you ask 'am I doing the right thing?' We can only do what we feel is the best and hope we are right. I have chosen not to keep my husband on namenda due to side affects. He is only on galantamine and that will probably be the only drug unless and antidepressant is needed later or drugs for behavior.
