This poor man is having one thing after another...of course it is red and infected..it finally drained but very slow..and BIG...now after it starts to drain I use neospirin and cover it with gaze ..Dr. prescribed stonger pain medication ...

I read about preparation H for pain...any one use this???any one have any suggestions? He does have appointment to see his Dr. Tuesday..Poor baby..JOY

You can put warm salt water compress on it to relieve the pain. It might be a staph infection so I would not put prep H on it. The neosporin will help with the local infection but it needs to be checked and cultured. Believe me my DH has a recurrent staph infection and it always produces a carbuncle. When he goes to the DR ask for a script for Phisohex soap. wash him entirely in it including his eye brows, inside his ears and nose. It will keep the recurrance down. Discard anything that comes in contact with the drainage, wear gloves and wash your hands. Bleach the tub and throw away or wash seperately and bleach any towels and washclothes that he uses while the carbuncle is visable. There may be a smaller one also located in another area like the fold of this leg(groin) or on his scalp.

Be very careful with these. My DH had one on the back of his leg. He thought it was a boil and than it got bigger and bigger and when I told him to see the doctor he said no (of course). I finally got him to go and from there we put him in the hospital. He ended up with a Mrsur infection and had to have surgery. 5 days in the hospital in isolstion and 4 weeks of home health care to change his bandages and dailey visits for antibiotics at the hospital that had to be given intervienously for 10 days. Nothing to play with. He had been getting boils off and on for some time but this last one was bad. Believe me if he gets another one it will be a trip to the doctors right away. To add to this because he had that type of infection when he went back to the hospital for pneumonia he was in isolation again.

any update?? They should not send the results in the mail they should be treating it aggressively. If you need to take him to one of those urgent care or doc in a box places. They are capable of draining it and prescribining the antibiotics he needs. You see it gets in the blood stream and travels all over.

i agree you shouldnt wait to get the results by mail. you should Call and ask about what rx he needs to be on. neosporin may not be enough if its staph it can spread to him and you.
yes bleach and clean everything it comes in contact with. my 6yr grandaughter had one of these after the stepgrandaughter and she took bath together-so it can spread. they treated with antiobiotic for both of them. divvi

I hate to add to your problems-but it may be worse than staph-it could be MRSA which is a staph infection resistant to most antibiotics.
