I am going to change my hb from seroquel to risperidone, to settle him down.It seems like the seroquel doesn't last very long, he has been taking 25 mg 3 times a day, Has anyone had good results with risperidone??? Also what can I expect to notice?? Thanks everyone, Have A Nice Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had excellent results with the Risperdone, but have you cleared the change with your husband's doctor first? Many doctors are now very reluctant to give Risperdone because of the risks of heart attacks and strokes. It is up to the individual caregiver to make the decision as to the risk. Neither one of us could live with his rages, so to me, the risk was worth it.
My husband has had no bad side effects from the Risperdone.
After a stay in a Behavior Unit, the Neuro switched my husband from Seroquel to Risperdone. He also, takes Klonpin in the evenings. He still has some behavior problems, but not as bad & as often as with the Seroquel. Also, Seroquel caused his feet to swell terrible.
My dh was put on Seroquel about a month ago after six weeks or more of behavior that was driving me to the brink. He immediately got better but that only lasted about 2 weeks. The neuro then put him on Risperdone. He is now much better. Not so depressed, angry and hateful.
I just had him to the neuro this morning for a check up on how the Risperdone was doing. It hasn't stoped his parnanoia.
I was wondering is one of the side affects wanting to eat all the time??
I am so happy to see all your comments on this...My dw is on risperdone, liquid form, and we call it Vitamin B9... (begnign), and is on .5ml a day. I was considering changing it to seroquel, but glad to hear that it is not always effective. We have noticed that my dw has developed twitching of her arms and legs, and that is one of the side effects also of risperadone..... But twitching is more tolerable than the meanness, and easily agitated spouse. We are considering increasing her dosage to twice a day. The doctor prescribed 1ml, but I think that her 100 lb body could not tolerate it.... So if we do it twice daily, she will be on the actual dosage that was prescribed, and we will watch for changes in her twitching, and temperament. Or perhaps we will go to 7.5 ml in a one dose.......
I had the opposite experience. My husband started on risperdone and it made him more agitated. They switched him to seroquel which has worked much better.
joang, yes I talked to his doctor about changing meds, it says to take it at night, but wouldn't it make more sense to take it in the morning so it can settle him down durning the day. Will be starting out 0.5 mg for 30 days and see how he does on it. So when does your hb take his risperdone morning or night??? Thanks-Again Everyone!!!!!!!!!!
He WAS on it twice a day, with approval from the doctor to increase to 3 times if needed. He's fine on once a day now. I give it to him in the morning with breakfast. As with all things AD, he doesn't even remember the year and a half of screaming rages.
DH was put on Risperidone at the ALF because of agitation that escalated into trying to hit people and also escape. He's become so much calmer, cheerier and just easier to manage. But last week was a full moon and he once again tried to gather up his belongings and leave, because he "had to get back to the barracks" ... a throwback to his WWII days. We now have about two weeks at a time when he's behaving pretty well and even joining in on the sing-alongs.
Dh is on Risperidone, .5 mg twice a day. It has done wonders for his behavior, virtually eliminating rage and agitation. I have the doctor's permission to give him more if he is agitated, but I have never noticed that an extra dose helped at all. So I have quit trying it, just sticking to breakfast and late afternoon doses. He sleeps long hours (but I think he did that before the Risperidone) and yes, wanted to eat everything in sight. That effect dwindled after a few months and he wasn't eatin much and lost weight (which he needed to lose). However now he is back to being very greedy, constantly raiding the fridge, wanting everything he sees in the supermarket, etc. I'm afraid he will gain the weight back. Trick: I put the apples, which he loves, in plain sight right in front of the fridge, and everything bad for him behind stuff that he's not interested in. He doesn't usually find it. I was worried about another side effect that is listed for Risperidon, that is high glucose levels, because dh has diabetes. But I monitored it closely and it did not seem to affect his glucose levels.
