since this is the first year we'll be filing the long form can anyone give me an idea what will be deductible such as ALF bills,MMR bills? have no idea an havn't talked to accountant yet
don, the ALF bills, dr's bills, mileage to/from drs. offices, medication, any supplies she needs for her care, such as depends, maybe mileage to/from visiting her in the ALF. There have been other posts on this issue, I'll try to bring them up for you. You really need to discuss with an accountant.
This year I asked our CPA about some sort of tax credit for people w/dementias as is granted to blind or folks with prostheses. Nope; seems to me that would be just as viable a credit. Someone from Canada, I think, mentioned that's recognized there.
I believe all out of pocket expenses mentioned above are deductible as part of the Medical Expense line item..and it includes the expenses you may have had to modify your residence, Cobra, private health insurance and Home Health as well. You accountant can be more specific.
Yup, I sure included out of pocket, insurance, home health care and mileage, new lockable gate to deck and keyed deadbolts for doors--everything I could find for a deduction. The credit would have been nice, too. This site is a great place for information, encouragement, and caring, empathetic sojourners.
My dh is in daycare now once a week. Plus he will be going to assisted living for 2 weeks at a time in the future so I can go see my relatives. I don't have prescriptions from the doctors for these. Do I need prescriptions to claim both day care and stays at assisted living in order to claim those things on my taxes?
I would suggest asking the facilities and your MD what may be required...not just for tax purposes. The ALF may require your MD to admit your DH to the unit and to follow him (provide care, if needed) or assign an MD to follow him while you are gone. Not certain what day care may require. I would also suggest the facility and the MD have copies of all your POA's if they don't already. As mentioned above, I have never been asked by SS or the IRS to verify any such related expenses...just keep receipts.
