    Today I received a check from Social Security for $255. What exactly is the purpose of this benefit. It wouldn't even cover the flowers at the funeral... let alone the funeral. It is almost a joke.

    Maybe just a little bit better than a stick in the eye? I've read the rationale (sp) before, but it didn't make much sense to me then either.

    it's most likely the death benefit; or it could be the (partial) rebate on the donut hole payment. Mine came to ME since I'd gone into the hole; my husband didn't get one. It's part of the new health care bill.

    I know it is the death benefit... I wrote that in the discussion title. It is so useless it seems like a total waste of taxpayer money. I honestly felt like sending it back. What is the Rationale?

    The death benefit was originally meant to cover the cost of burial but with inflation, it is now a joke!
