I'm a little suprised that they said "100% insane". I've never heard of Alzheimer's patients described as insane, althought it may fit. I'm curious how others feel about this. DickS
DickS: I suspect what is meant is that it is 100% insane that AD gets 6% of the funding of cancer research when mortality rate 100%/survival rate 0%. On the other hand, it doesn't personally bother me if some read it the other way: my therapist advised me to always remember that AD is a progressive neurological DISEASE that is fatal and has no cure, not merely "forgetfullness" like some of the aricept ads would lead you to believe.
DickS: I guess it's a little hard to understand without actually seeing the ad, but the insane part did refer to the lack of funding in comparison to the funding of cancer research (see the footnote). It isn't a commentary on the disease.
When I read the ad Marilyn copied, I immediately related the insanity to the fact that the funding for Alzheimer's Research is only 6% of that allocated to Cancer Research.
As Marsh so elequentlly stated, AD is not a mental disorder, it is a brain disease.
here is a link to the ad. the ad is meant to read that's its insane that alz has such little funding. http://als-advocacy.blogspot.com/2010/11/here-is-stunning-ad.html
ALS is trying to utilize the ALZ ad in the link provided but anyway the news can get out. Would like a copy to post to FB for those "friends" who don't get it.
sally--I originally saw it in the Wall St. Journal (full page) in Jan. Just saw another one a few days ago. I have also seen a smaller version of the same ad in the NY Times, I think.
That add is good, we also have one in Canada that shows a woman attending her own funeral and the narator says Alz takes your life long before you die. That is the true face of Alzheimer's
