Do you mean that he has welts from the paper type, like Depends? I would check with the doctor for an ointment that will clear it up, covering it with a light gauze wrap. I have never heard of adult cloth diapers, but maybe someone has. You could try other paper brands to see if they are less abrasive or keep a gauze wrap around his waist where he is getting the welts.
Mary, maybe he needs a size larger....have you changed brands? Maybe something in that particular brand is something he is allergic to....We use the paper pull ups (like Depends only Walgreens we have found to be the softest).
I hope you are doing okay and that he heals quickly.
Thanks, everyone. He's also getting a reaction to the 4-gauze placed over the several draining wounds on his back. Or maybe it's the tape used, but the tape is that thin paper-like tape and is supposed to be non-allergic. He's always had problems with his skin. The whole of his back looks burned, not just the welts at the waist under diaper. I'm just shooting thoughts off the top of my head here. Some babies are allergic to paper diapers and have to have cloth. Diaper services can supply them. I'll check into make of diaper today when I visit. What I did notice yesterday was that the diaper was very small and the waistband felt harsh, scratchy, to my finger. I phoned the doctor yesterday from the facility and his office said he would fax an RX to pharmacy that delivers, probably at high dosage cortisone creme.
Mary75--some years ago I had a similar4 problermm with tape being used on my knee. It's almost as though the skin can't breathe. Actually, some peeled off with the tape. I still have that problem with the stickum on many bandaids, and bandaging materials, even when tey say non-latex. Only thing I've found works is to have a layer between to buffer---soft fabric, gauze. As to diaper, it sounds klike they're too small, but a larger size will only help, not fix the problem because you still have to heal up what's there.
Thanks to everyone for the good info. Boy, that primer on diapers that MarilyninMD posted is thorough; all you ever need to know. Dh had a better day today, and I think it was because a larger size diaper was used, so you're right on that, Carosi. Also the doctor changed the anti-itch cream base to an anti-itch ointment base. The ingredients are the same, (camphor, menthol and a low dose of cortisone), but according to the pharmacist, the composition of the ointment is easier on the skin and more easily absorbed than the creme, and the ointment is less drying to DH's already dry skin. DH is being moved into a warmer room tomorrow. Each time I see him he is a little closer to leaving, but he is still bright and responsive. What a change mentally once he was off Aricept, after being on it for 3 years. It's like having him back again, the real one, only now he's leaving physically. Thanks to all you fellow travellers.
Lori, my DH also improved mentally when we discontinued Aricept and Namenda. And he often tells me now that he is not in that "fog" anymore! He was on Aricept 7 years and Namenda 4-5. I just weaned him off them, with his doctor's okay.
lori many of us here have seen dramatic mental improvements taking them off the meds. unfortunately there comes a time when we can no longer justify giving the meds when side effects or intolerance becomes a problem. i opted to take my DH off due to pressure of side effects and was astounded as well as many here how much more alert he became off the meds. the more i hear the more i feel the drug companies are making us believe keeping them on them indefinately is a must. each of us has to make the decision when/if to try taking them off. some have tried it seen decline and returned them back to the meds. its a hit/miss at best. divvi
Lori, yes, my daughter comments on it, too. "We have our old E. back." Divvi has summarized it well, so I have nothing to add there. In hindsight, it makes me wonder if DH would have done better without ever being on it, but therein lies madness, and I'm not going there with Hamlet. Or was it Hamlet? As Divvi says, it's hit and miss at best. Divvi, did you get my mail re. ex-wife back visiting DH?
Mary, my only comment is congrats on the warmer room but hopefully they'll have a humidifier. Warmth dries the air, usually too much for our DH's with the sensitive skin, thus bringing a new round of problems with which to deal. Kadee, when DH was at home I had to resort to ordering the Tena, could not locate the style/size needed in any nearby stores. Don't recall where I got them. Expect to pay a premium.
Thanks Weejun, good comment. I've got a good humidifier I can take in, but so far, so good. It's been raining this past week and we have the window open (no more shortness of breath either, or need of oxygen, a spin-off benefit).
