Recently, we attended a conference where a speaker said people with AD qualify for our state's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. I was aware of the Library, but had never thought about my husband using their services. I signed him up and ordered some audiobooks and was sent a digital player, all free of charge. I have started to experiment by playing the books at various times, seeing if he can enjoy them, since it has been years since he has read anything. One thing I have noticed, it is helping to fill in the silence or replacing the nonsensical conversation, which is a plus that I didn't anticipate. I always used to get audiobooks at the public library, but this setup is a real timesaver because you can order materials online and they are sent out and returned by mail. They have quite an extensive collection, and you can either place orders for books you want or let the library send you selections based on the topics you have chosen when you registered.

MarilyninMD that is a great suggestion to others. I am going to check into this for my dh. H can no longer read but would enjoy this. Happy Holidays and again, thanks.

Great idea. We listen to them in the car but will try to get him to sit long enough during the day to listen to a book.

I have been using this service for the lasta several months because of my vision. I really enjoy them although I don't find DH listening to them. I listen to them during the day when I am busy in the kitchen--sort of mult-tasking. :)

Well, if you asked my husband whether he wants to listen, he would probably say no. But since he shadows me, he has no choice! He is where I am, so if the book is playing, he hears it!!!!!!!!!! He reacts to what is being said, so I know he is comprehending it.

How do you sign up for this program? It sounds like a really good idea.

I found our state library by Googling it; the application form was online. I then faxed the completed form to my husband's doctor (the one who is treating him for AD); his office completed and mailed it in. I order materials online and the library mailed me everything, including the player.

An update on audiobooks--recently, our public libraries have stocked a new product called a Playaway, which is a form of digital book. It's a small player (about the size of a cassette tape) and contains the book, all in one. You listen through earphones, or can connect it to speakers, or can play it in the car. When my husband was home, I rarely had time to sit and read a book, but I could have put the Playaway in my pocket and listened with earbuds as I did things around the house. Just wanted to pass this along to those of you who want to read but can't find the time.

The libraries also have books you can download to MP3 players & other devices for free. I can download books to my iPhone.
