Today, despite being on the do not call list, we got a call from an 800 # and it started out about being from a credit card co and there is nothing wrong with your credit cards but we can help you get your interest rates down to 6.9%. For more info press 1 or to be disconnected press 3..I pressed 3. Then I called it back and got the voice mail that gave the stuff about interest and then goes on to say press or say your card #...I listened no farther. I called our local police who logged my call about this as it is similar to that call that went around a couple of years ago.
Then I put that no in google and sure enough a lot of folks are getting calls from that 800 # which I think is a ligit # BUT it is being rerouted somehow...it is a # many banks use and from what I could figure out, the banks make calls to people who are in arrears on payments especially if there is a high balance. One poor soul said they asked her for her SSN and card # and she gave it all to them..now she is scared witless.
The # to be aware of is 1-800 285-8585. Oh if you don't answer and your machine picks up it seems no message is left and some mentioned they have got more than one call from this outfit. It is holiday time and there are bad schemes galore so keep alert..especially if our LOs get hold of the phone.
Mimi- we have gotten calls from that number on both of our phones. I just hang up except I did call back, pushed 0 and told them to not call us again. We are on the no call list and if they do I will report them to the attorney general of our state who will pursue them. So far, after a couple weeks, they have not called back.
Seems being on the no call list does not help anymore. My sister has an unlisted, unpublished number and she gets them. Computers dial numbers at random and if you say something to the person on the other end (if you get one) they will say they are sorry and have no control over what number the computer dial.
I'm on the no call list also but receive these calls too. I just hang up.
FROM WIKIPEDIA---
Placing one's number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, unsolicited calls. The following are exceptions granted by existing laws and regulations.
The registry only applies to residential lines, not to business lines. A person may still receive calls from political organizations. The organization Citizens for Civil Discourse has lobbied Congress to close this loophole by developing a National Political Do Not Call Registry where voters can register their phone numbers and ask politicians to take the "Do Not Contact Pledge". Its database is not backed by the force of law and as of November 2008, only 3 politicians running for office signed the pledge. A person may still receive calls from not-for-profit organizations. A person may still receive calls from those conducting surveys. A person may still receive calls from companies with which he or she has an existing business relationship for up to 18 months after his or her last purchase, payment, or delivery from it, unless person specifically asks the company not to call again. A person may still receive calls from a company up to 31 days after submitting an application or inquiry to that company, unless the company is specifically asked not to call. A person may still receive calls from bill collectors (either primary creditors or collection agencies). These callers are, however, regulated by other laws, such as those limiting them to calling during "reasonable hours." Some creditors may not call debtors who file for bankruptcy protection.
It has gotten to the point that if I don't recognize the # or name on my caller ID I just don't answer the phone. If whoever is calling REALLY wants to talk to me they will leave a message.
FYI: in many states regarding bill collectors: if you tell them to stop calling you, by law they have to. They can send you all the mail they want, but they can no longer phone you. I know Oregon has this law and I am sure other states do too.
This is the lastest scam....and it is interesting....http://www.theonion.com/video/social-security-scam-robs-elderly-by-convincing-th,18377/ I am convinced that I am dead, but luckily I do not get any social security checks yet/// I gave them a promissary note, and that seemed to make them happy.
They also advised me that if I am half dead, I am eligible to only send half of my checks....
