Latest AARP magazine received today. Susan Franklin, diagnosed at age 58. She and her husband have hope for the immunotherapy drug IGIV. I haven't heard of this drug. Does anyone know anything about it?
I considered the study for my hb. Since it has been shown to be effective and relatively safe for other diseases, I felt it would be safe and give some hope. If we were going to stay in one place for sure (not travel around in the RV) I would do it, except he is not keen on any study due to the MMSE all the time. Says he doesn't need to be reminded. Nice thing about the study, once you get started the infusions can be done at home.
I would definitely give it a try if DH qualified, but they want a MMSE of 16-26, and I doubt my husband would score that low, because he knows what is on the MMSE and will prep... I am going to see if I can get him to go to Georgetown Memory Disorder Clinic after the holidays. He was diagnosed with MCI in July but has continued to steadily decline. Hopefully we can get some more clarity on his condition, and maybe get in to this trial.
I've read a number of very positive articles about people improving on this treatment.
We were all set to go with this trial when they discovered DH's B12 was low and would not start until it was brought up with shots which would be every day for a week then once a week for a month then every month. By that time he had already been randomized (selected for either the real thing or the placebo). Because of the delay he was dropped. It turned out to be a blessing in diguise. The infusions last four hours each and I now know that would never have worked for him.
My DH would never make it through a four hour infusion. He's in terrific pain most of the time with a bad back and arthritis, has abestosis and has had a heart attack. Those things would probably disqualify him anyway.
