SOmething I thought had "passed" came back this morning. DH was up earlier than usual, had eaten breakfast and was still sitting at the kitchen table when I went to the bathroom. When I came back into the kitchen he was nowhere to be found, the front door was ajar but none of his jackets were missing. I went out looking, also called the police and they soon found him, walking towards Rotterdam, with no coat on in subfreezing weather. I had got a bit lax about keeping doors locked in the daytime since he hadn't wandered recently. But it's been brought home to me again: you can't let up for a minute.
Good reminder for me. I've been keeping all the doors double-key locked. It's quite cold today and windy, and I thought he surely won't go out now; maybe I can stop this locking for awhile. Your experience and a word from our son about an elderly man who went out when it was freezing. He lost some toes in that experience; so...I'll keep locking up.
I never thought about the daytime wandering. The only time DH took off was at night when I was asleep. Fortunately he went out the back door and the back yard is all fenced in. I got one of those security alarms that set off a siren if the door opens. I set it every night. I suppose it would e a good idea if I set it during the daytime as well. Seems like there's an awful lot of stuff to remember.
