If all the sports teams would wear purple in support of Alzheimer's/Dementia research. It seems like they wear pink quite often for breast cancer and with all the concussions in football you would think the NFL would want to do something to help find a cure. From what I have read some of the retired football players have memory problems. I am not sure about baseball and basket ball but I would think that getting hit in the head with a baseball could cause some damage.
I have no doubt that many veterans of contact sports have impaired brains. An extreme example is Mohammed Ali's boxing-induced Parkinson's. Maybe current players don't want to think about the future they may be setting themselves up for, by commemorating the ailment!
AD: Number of patients = 5.3 Million Cost of care per year = $172 Billion New Cases per year = 454,000 Mortality = 100% fatal Unpaid care by caregivers = $144 Billion
Breast Cancer: New Cases per year = 261,000 Mortality = 2.5 Million "survivors"
Jean--not only do some of the retired football players have dementia, but a while back some of the wives lobbied the NFL for a plan that would cover the expenses of long-term care. They were successful, and now I believe that the NFL will pay something like $88,000 per year for dementia care for retired players. It seems to me a direct cause/effect relationship must have been proven, otherwise, they would never have agreed to this arrangement. I think your idea of the teams doing something to support the cause is a great one; our team--the Baltimore Ravens--already wears purple because it's the team color.
I wonder what insurance company would touch someone who participates in an "extreme" or contact sport? (professional boxing, football). Several years ago, I looked into long term care insurance for myself (upon John's own diagnosis) and....I couldn't qualify!!! With ANYone!! Why? Because I'm considered too much of a risk because of my continued participation in my sport (QUITE toned down now) and all the head injuries (loosing conciousness) and lengthy surgical procedures over many years. How about that. Otherwise, I'm perfectly healthy . . . kind of . . . mostly (I like to think).
How are you doing with your horses? Michelle just placed her animals with a lady across the way from where they live..all of them..the horses, goats, chickens, chicks and the rooster, the small horses and peacocks...this gal has a rescue farm. I am trying to get hold of her name and number. She came over and looked at Michelle's zoo and the jackass needed ferrier work as did the horses..she offered to take the animals. So they are gone now..Michelle and her family move to Iceland in Dec, movers come Nov 30 for the sea containers. It is really happening. I thought maybe if you still need help with your animals, if I can get the name of this lady maybe she could be of help to you..let me know.
