My DH is in early stage 6. In a few weeks I hope to put him in a nearby ALF for one week while I visit my family who live 1000 miles away. How do I prepare him (or not). Do I tell him the night before, the morning of, or some other way? I fully expect him to put up a major fuss. The doctor said to give him a Xanax the morning of respite. I considered waiting a few months but my elderly Dad will soon be 87 and I need to see him before it is too late. Have any of you dealt with this?

I never tell my husband anything ahead of time because either he forgets anyway, or he thinks we're going right then and wants to go right then!!

My husband loves to GO, so will let me take him places....I usually bribe him by getting him a milk shake to drink on the way. <grin> And after you get him there, wait until they are busy with him, and tell him you'll be back later, and to enjoy himself. You need not try to explain when, because his ability to understand time any more anyway. Remember that they are now children or toddlers mentally in their abilities to understand. Try not to worry about him while you are gone. He'll be okay. Enjoy your visit with your father and know that everything will be waiting for you when you get home. You are entitled to time away.
