Last night as hb was getting ready for bed he stopped suddenly and looked really weird. I asked what was happening he said there was a light circling his face. He started turning different ways and stopping and it was coming and going. I tried to see it(couldn't see anything) and tried standing where he was...nothing. The room was dark except for the light from the TV. Anyway, he finally said it's gone and got in bed. He decided it was a white eyelash.......anybody else experience anything like this. Hb is still early stage.
There were MANY visual anomalies in the early stages of my husband's PCA. (visual variant of AD.) It is likely that whatever the main pattern of progression any case of AD takes, there could be visual effects. He used to report a lot of lights flashing, or things seeming to jump around. Not so much anymore, but we are well into mid-stage.
Long, long before diagnosis Charlie used to have light flashes and always said he felt strange for several minutes afterward. Then there was the aide at his facility who told us last week about her grandfather whom she helps take care of at home. Said he kept them up all night fussing about the light coming from the closet, which they could not see. Finally discovered that a beam of light from a light in another room was hitting on a sequin on one of grandma's purses in the closet. It could only be seen from where he was lying.
Just to be safe I would consult an eye doctor just in case it is the retina. I had a series of flashing circular light in one eye several years ago and got to the eye doctor first thing in the morning..turns out to be post viteral detachment (PVD)..nothing dangerous but at dusk at first I would see this flash going in a circular motion.. now I never see it. It is still there but it took some time to adjust to it and the doctor told me not to go looking for it If it is the retina, I don't know what can be done for AD folks. Otherwise it could be as suggested part of the process.
You are right, a trip to the eye doctor certainly wouldn't hurt and would rule out any problem there. Last night at bed time he was in the kitchen last and when he came into the bedroom he said " saw that light again". He thought it might be his glasses, but the night before he wasn't wearing glasses when he saw the light. Thank you all for the input, I think I'll make an eye appt.
I have had 4 or 5 incidents in the last 10 years that I had flashing lights and visual problems lasting anywhere from 60 seconds to about 2 minutes. The funny thing is that they all happened at dinner time. My ophthalmologist was a little puzzled by this and he talked to a number of doctors about this. He came to the conclusion that like people who have migraines and see these lights that I was having the visual effects without the pain of a migraine. I have never had many headaches in my life. It is a very scary feeling when they are happening.
Bama my daughter and I have optic migraines, too. Daughter called me in a panic and described the exact symptoms. My opthalmologist said not to be concerned. Sometimes they are black and white and sometimes in color. It is like a rim of fractured colored glass.
