I have lived in this valley for over 40 yrs and find there is very little in the way of help or support. Anyone else find something we don't know about?
Yes, I contacted them and the Caregivers Assn. Was put on a list four yrs ago and nothing happened other than a visit to fill out forms. Mimi, I am between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, near Magic Mountain.
On the home page -www.thealzheimerspouse.com - on the left side, towards the bottom, there is a section called "Where We are From". One of our members, danielp, compiled it for me. Check in there to see if anyone else is from your area.
I don't really know your specifics, age, stage, etc. or what you specifically are looking for. But you might look in the phone book for state & county bureaus w/names like Commission on Aging, Dept of Aging & adult services, Dept of elder affairs, human services, division of sr citizens, etc. Each state is different. These facilities are found in local phone books under 'govt listings' for US, city, county & state.
I can't think of a large hospital or university near you, but sometimes universities & hospitals have memory clinics, research centers, aging, etc. Also look in the phone book for 'home health services' 'nurses registeries' & 'mental health services,' and 'senior centers. You never know what any of these might lead to.
Try Geriatric care mgrs - www.caremanagers.org CG alliance - www.caregiver.org alliance for CG - www.caregiving.org
US admn on aging - www.aoa.gov medicare/medicaid services - www.cms.hhs.gov VA - www.va.gov
When I was CG for DH I got help from LA County, but I think that program has been eliminated - budget cuts. Also, about 30 yrs ago I had a serious personal problem w/no help I knew about, so I put an ad in the local newspaper & asked anyone w/the same problem if they'd like to meet and talk. I got 6 or 7 responses. Sometimes you have to do the grunt work yourself.
Good luck. I think it must be extra hard when you feel there's no one to reach out to who will understand.
