It sure is a good thing I decided to take the weekend off of computer work. I woke up this morning, turned on the computer to check my e-mail, and the dreaded BLACK screen appeared with white writing. OMINOUS. Not to worry, I called Matt, my computer whiz, and even though it worked when he got here, we decided to go ahead with the building of a new one. I had planned on it a few months ago, but with my hectic summer, I had never gotten to it. So off he went with my computer to build me exactly what I need. The best part is that he will transfer all of my data and programs to the new computer, which he will include in the price.

I am now using my laptop, which I have not been able to type on very well since I bought it a year and a half ago. I would type something, and the letter would jump to another place in the document. He looked at it, and with the press of one button, fixed the problem. So here I am typing away, and now I'm going to make some lunch and read my book. And wait for my new computer to be built.

Isn't it great to have a computer whiz to call when something goes wrong??? I have one too. I hired him at my last job to fix work computer problems, and he went on to big and better jobs and things, but when I retired he told me to always call him if I had a problem with my home computers. He comes to my house, fixes whatever and will never charge me unless he has to buy something. He and DH get along well too, so it's a two-fold blessing.

Joan, MY laptop frequently does that...a letter jumps up four or five lines in text and begins writing there. What magic button did your genius geek push, pray tell???? I knew it had to be some setting, but nothing on the "setting" menu describes jumpy letters.

    Nancy,

My laptop is an HP. On the top of the black rim that goes around the touch pad, there is a rectangular button. To the left of the button, there is a blue icon shaped like a computer. It is lit up. If I press the rectangular button, the icon turns reddish orange and locks the cursor. I can then type with no jumping. But whenever I need to move the cursor to do something else, I have to press the button to release the lock. It is easy and convenient.

    Nancy,

Not me. Matt. I had the same reaction as you when he showed me.

I have the same problem with my new computer. One call to the 'concierge service' thru Costco and was told the same thing - turn off the mouse on the computer. I use a wireless mouse so do not use it. My old HP would stay locked but this new one I have to remember to lock the built in mouse every time I turn it on or reboot - such a pain. Often forget until I notice my mouse has bounced up in whatever I am typing. He said the built in is so sensitive just light movement can move your cursor. Happy to hear others have had the problem cause I felt 'stupid' when he told me the problem - I thought I had a bad computer.
