I finally got a new GPS. I liked the old one, but it needed updating again, and they charge $80 every time. I had already paid that once, and I wasn't paying it again. My new one was on sale for $139. Garmin nuvi. This one says the street names, which the old one did not. I need all the help I can get. HOWEVER, the voice on the new one is not the same. It is fast and kind of harsh. My old Miss GPS ( I named her that) was calm and patient, which always kept me calm when I didn't know where I was going, which was often. I want my calm lady back. I went through the settings, and the harsh one is the only voice listed for American English, so I set it at a British woman speaking. She is still faster than the old one, but much calmer than the American English one. So my question is - Is there an APP or something that I can download for different American English voices? If there is, I couldn't find it.

If I wanted a harsh voice giving me directions, I would listen to my husband sitting in the passenger seat yelling at me every time I made a wrong turn.

You are serious, I know, but I laughed at your post. You ARE TOO FUNNY!!! (I named the guy on my GPS system too. He reminded me of a friend who is always telling whoever is driving HOW to drive, where to turn, when to stop.... ad nauseum. SO, we named our GPS guy Reagan, after him!!)

Joan, I copied this from Garmin.com

Question: What voices are available for my GPS device?
    Answer:

Garmin GPS devices that have the text-to-speech (TTS) or the Speaks Street Names feature will have both a Male and Female voice available in multiple languages and dialects. If you have a Garmin GPS device that gives voice directions, but does not have text-to-speech then the device will only have a female voice in multiple languages and dialects.

Additional voices in alternative languages and different voices for text-to-speech units can be downloaded by using the Garmin WebUpdater.

If you are unsure if your device supports the text-to-speech or has the Speaks Street Names feature, please visit https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134 and click Speaks Street Names under the feature tab on the left side of the screen.

Special seasonal voices can be loaded to your compatible device from the Garmin website at www.garmin.com/vehicles/voices. Note: Check the compatibility listing on this page to ensure the voice will work with your device before installing it onto your device.

I have the Garmin nuvi also and I love it. I don't have a problem with the female voice at all, but DH does sometimes. She's a little fast.

Vickie-so your husband is having a problem with fast women-hmmm. My daughter's Garmin was just recalled because of a problem with the battery catching fire. She has had one for years and has become so dependant on it I think she depends on it to get her from her bedroom to the kitchen.

Yep, bluedaze - except for me! LOL

My Garmin wasn't one that was recalled thank goodness!

Thanks Vickie. I will check that out. I am dead serious when I say that my family has a defective direction gene. It came from my father's side. From my father, down to his brother, his sons, my sister and me, one of her sons, my cousin. All of us. We're a directional mess. But, Nancy B, we have great stories about our misadventures:

My sister and I, along with her two babies and my nine year old - driving through Texas.

My sister and I, and the lost corridor

My cousin and the revolving toll booth

My father who went to New Hampshire to visit me. Too bad I lived in Massachusetts

My father babysitting my 10 year old, who couldn't tell his Grandpa how to get to the library about 3 miles from our house, even though I had taken him there hundreds of times

My sister and I in Discovery Cove

    My sister in SeaWorld

You get the picture. And my blog before I discovered the wonders of GPS - http://www.thealzheimerspouse.com/changingplaces.htm

I love listening to the GPS in the GoBuses, when the drivers are using them, especially because of all the construction we've had this Summer. " Go 1.2 miles and turn on Main." We drive. We turn on Gove becuse Mai is close. "Recalculating . . . Go .5 miles . . ." . . . "Rcalculating ..." I swear the GPS gets a funny sarcasm in its tone after a few "Recalculating..."s.
