Just found out today that my son accepted a new teaching position in Busan, South Korea for another year. It's been a joy to have him here the last two months and have a little more freedom in the evenings to do something I want to do. He will be leaving sometime in the next two weeks once his paperwork for his visa is done.

My only hope for the next year is that my husband doesn't decline too much over the next year. This past year while my son was gone my husband declined in his memory and language abililties. I'm hoping he will still recognize his son when he returns next year.

Just needed to tell somebody about his leaving.

Sorry Deb about your son leaving but I can tell you are happy for him. Only time will tell how your hb will be in the next year.

Deb, I know you will miss your son when he leaves. They do have their own lives though, don't they?? I hope your DH will do good this year and will still remember your son next year when he returns. Hugs to all of you.

Deb although our kids give us comfort while home we all agree they must go about their own lives as much as possible. our spouses would want that for them. i hope his time goes well abroad and you get to see him again soon. best wishes for a safe journey.

How fortunate you were to have your son w/you for 2 mos. I wish him well, this visit w/his father was a blessing no matter how things turn out in the future. Take care of yourself and you DH.

Deb, you must be very proud of him! And what a blessing he got to spend so much time with his dad!

Deb, how wonderful that your son is teaching in South Korea! What a great life experience! I hope to go there one day; we have grandchildren from there. And, how wonderful that he was able to see his dad while his dad still remembers him.

Deb, have you thought of Skype? It is an free online access for computer cameras. A friend gave me a portable, tiny camera that clips onto my laptop. Now my Mom can SEE and Talk to her great-grand-babies down in Massachusetts. It helps because then she is familiar when we visit. This might work for your son and husband. Arms around, as you see your son off on another adventure.

    Susan,

This will be my son's second year teaching in Korea. We used skype all the time his first year. I even signed my son up for one of their plans that allowed him to make as many skype calls he wanted to landlines and cellphones in the US. It cost $16.95 for three months. That way he could call here whenever he was able and not have to worry about anyone being on our computer to hear his call. We also keep in contact on Facebook. If I hadn't spoken with him in awhile, I could always check in with him on Facebook just to say hi.

The whole year my son was in South Korea my husband never spoke with him. He liked to look at pictures of our son or see him when I spoke with him but it was out of sight--out of mind for him. Even now that Nick has been staying with us for the last two months, he will sometimes be surprised that he is here.

I will miss having actual adult conversations with another person. My son is really good at wanting to discuss different ideas and philosophies with me (he did minor in philosopy in college). He is also really good with his dad. To me that is the worst part of him being gone. No longer having someone to talk to.
