Has anyone dealt with this problem? When I cook for my wife, sometimes she eats and then immedietly starts asking where the food is. She gets quit serious hollaring that someone (usually a family member) eats all the food and we are left to go hungry. I know that she believes this to be true even though she just ate. Sometimes I can satisfy her with ice cream or chocolate, but sometimes I have to coook again to keep her calm. She is doing it right now and I have nothing out I was going to get takeout tonight. She is outside screeming at someone not real about stealing all the food. This is very disturbing to me.
  2.
My hubby will ask me, after I was at the table with him, if I ate...or he will say, what's for lunch like he did yesterday about an hour after we ate. He will fix himself a cocktail and forget that he already had one or he will make one at 2 in the afternoon..They just don't remember.
Maybe a thing you could do is have some of those little Stoffer frozen meals on hand for her when she gets like this. Or make enough the first time so there are left overs for the micorwave.

This is very common, and I know it has been discussed on these boards before. I will try to find those discussions for you. Most of our members are better at searching than I am, so if anyone can find them...............

either they can be hallucinating over food as an obsession or there may be a real issue with insulin levels too. medications and our fluctuating insulin can cause cravings and constant hunger. some of the meds we use for AD/dementia can mess with insulin levels too. i would ask dr next time to check the insulin just to see if they are high/low.

DH could never remember if he had eaten or not. He would ask me if I wanted to go out for dinner while I was clearing the table after eating.
If I felt it would do no good telling him we had just eaten, I would give him raisins or a piece of fruit and tell him we would go after I finished the dishes. Other times I could convince him we had eaten because the dishes were still on the table.
He would eat anything anytime. Especially if it was something sweet.
I believe the loose the feeling of being hungry or of being full at least that's what the doctor told me.

There is a man at my husband's nursing home who starts asking for lunch right after breakfast. This is quite common.

DH doesn't ask for more food after eating and never snacks. However, as soon as a meal is finished he will ask - what's for lunch...or dinner? Depending on what I say, he will ask what kind of dishes we want. I'll tell him and he goes ahead and sets the table for the next meal! He loves anything I fix and says he's never had such good food. LOL

Doesn't matter what I fix for dinner my DH says it's great. Even if it's a Hungry Man TV dinner!

My DH isn't fussy anymore. I can fix easy meals & he is satisfied in fact he tells people that he is trying to cut back & he has lost about 35 pounds in the past 4 years. However, he drinks diet soda like water. He used to drink a lot of water before DX but now he turns up his nose at drinking water. I know that the diet sodas aren't really good for him, but not much I can do about it.

Elaine it takes a wise woman to pick her battles. Good for you.

The diet soda is getting on my nerves..seems I am always off to the shop for diet caffine free diet pepsi and Segrams VO so he can have his toddy...and at 80 it is one of his treats..an afternoon toddy. but the diet pop just goes so fast...and he has never been a big sweet eater unless it has nuts...and now he is after sweets..and he too says he is cutting back..he has lost a tiny bit of wt but funny thing he doesn't look like it so maybe it was excess fluid.
Now IF I could just get rid of those 35 lbs....

My wife can no longer speak in understandable sentences but she prattles on frequently at times during the day. She often gets this serious look on her face while I am trying to feed her (she cannot handle silverware anymore either) and start pointing here or there while pontificating her sweet little heart out. I have no idea what she is trying to say and it frustrates me. She can often answer simple questions like "Are you hungry?" so I ask her frequently. She will sometimes say she is hungry then will not eat. ARGGGG!

Mimi, diet soda is on my nerves too. We have to limit what's in the fridge otherwise he would drink 50 cans of diet, caffine soda. He guzzles it like water, but reluctantly drinks water. I can't even have a can or two because he drinks all of it. I cannot find a solution to this problem other than no buying it but I want to have a can or two each day for my personal enjoyment. Another pleasure lost to this horrible disease.

I'm sorry. I don't get it. Why does his drinking diet soda get on your nerves?

Buy the store brands if cost is the problem, - but please don't let drinking diet sodas get you down. There will come a time (and I can personally attest to this) when you'll be begging him to drink ANYTHING.

Are you afraid drinking diet sodas will kill him.

i would think it is the cost. We limit ourselves to one caffeine can and one non. My hb does drink regular - refuses diet. He won't drink it unless it is cold so unless he remembers to put it in, he doesn't have cold. but he does drink crystal light. I buy it and he has to mix it up or he has just cold water. I know this will most likely change with time. I did manage to buy some sugar free ice cream and he doesn't seem to notice the difference.

Every time my husband comes home from the day program he says he got nothing to eat. I know they have a hot lunch and 2 snacks a day. I just give him a small snack when we get in and he is satisfied.
He is obsessed with eating right now- if I put the TV on everybody there is eating no matter what they might be doing. Same thing if he sees an animal outside, it's always eating.
I guess this will pass too as all the other stuff. This one doesn't get to me.

    inge,

my husband says the same thing when he comes home from day care. I'll ask how was lunch and he will tell me that he didn't eat anything and nobody else did either. I know they have a morning snack, hot lunch and an afternoon snack. When I get his monthly report is shows that he usually eats all of his lunch and most of his snacks. Also, on day care days he eats less at dinner than on other days.

If my husband had his way, he would eat nothing but candy, bakery goods, anything sweet all day.

Cooking has gotten easier because dh no longer knows whether it's breakfast. lunch or dinner so I can make whatever the spirit moves me and he is happy. Also eats things he never used to like. But prefers fruit or other sweets, like most here. On day care days I usually have a very simple supper, and that's fine with him although like the others he says he has not had anything to eat all day.

Last night I had to get dinner for the first time in a long time. Because of a meeting being held here in the Inn, there was no evening meal. I cooked citrus-glazed salmon, honey-glazed carrots, and rice pilaf. It came out good and DW ate all of it, but I was very hot and tired when I got done. I still haven't completely cleaned up. My sister joined us and provided the dessert. I don't see how those of you who cook every day, plus take care of your spouse, can do it.

Marsh, you must remember women having been doing the cooking, cleaning and caring most of our lives. Most men have not.
