No problem changing names here. I called the power board and she ask for my address, telephone number and Social Security number and added me. AT&T did it on the phone also. The Bank Account is in both our names so I don't expect it to be a problem. The credit cards have always been in both names, the car and insurance is in both our names. Anything else I need to change?

Looks like you have it covered, Bama, but why is your car insurance still in his name? When I dropped DH from ours, my premium decreased. Was just wondering. He is still listed on our homeowners insurance.

Vickie, I talked to my agent about this. At my age I don't want to rock any boats. He retired from this company but underwriting doesn't know him from Adam. No company is standing in line to write a policy for a 82 year old woman.

    Carolyn,
If the utility bills ( or for that matter perhaps other kinds of bills) are in both names and if one dies, even if both parties are otherwise healthy, say in a car accident, getting the bills into your name later is made more difficult because you then have to have a copy of death certificates etc whereas otherwise you may simply be able to tell the utility co of the death. In the case we face here with AD, if down the road one or the other gets such an illness and cannot respond for him or herself, then you don't have to fuss so much with these companies getting this done. Some have told me that Dh has to authoize my name to be on the bills as well as his..see now nice and compicated our lives can be made. Ain't life grand?

Guess it all depends. My dad died about 10 years ago and electricity to farm he owned (no one lived there) was in his name. My brother continued to pay the bill until he died 6 years ago, and I've continued to pay the bill since. However, this summer we received a generic letter to all who have been paying accounts of dead folk that they should complete a form saying who is responsible for bill now. Small farming community; and, of course, everyone knew Dad wasn't paying the bill:) When my brother died, I had no problem changing/cancelling service for his utilities, w/o death cert, just with a phone call.
