Ok. I have been making sure DH is dry even use a hair dryer after the shower to make sure he is dry. Then have to put on a prescription mixed with Lotrimin twice a day. He was really peeling badly on his inner thigh. The A&D, Desitin (which has a lot more zinc oxide than both of the butt pastes) and going without pants did not work. At night DH wets so much that there is no way to keep him dry for that length of time. Waking him up would cause more problems. We have been living with this for over 5 wks now and although it looks better, I am still a wreck with worry. I was cutting off the elastic of the disposables so they would not rub at night. The bought the ones that have no sides with elastic instead. The are ok during the day - sometimes I just put them into the underpants so they are more comfortable. I even rinse with vinegar and water after the shower. Have sent for samples of new overnights from Tranquility but he still wets on the side he sleeps on as well as the protective pads. I don't understand how it goes up his undershirt almost to his shoulder. I cut up a disposable to put on the side thinking that would help. It also gets wet but the urine still goes up the t-shirt. Anyone with a clue? I know we have discussed these issues before but I am really trying to get this resolved. Don't know what else to do when the prescription is only working somewhat. Maybe I will try the yogart and acidophilis as he likes yogart. Had not thought of that before. I think I am beginning to ramble, sorry.
Do you know what the rash is? If it is like a diaper rash one thing that might work is Balmex. You can find that in the baby section at the grocery store. It is much better I think than Desitin or A&D. The other cream that might be soothing is Sween Cream. However, have you had DH seen by a doctor to determine what kind of rash he has so you are using the right kind of things to solve this?Is the rash painful or itchy? Could it be a reaction to something in the "depends" Maybe there is some odor control thing there that is causing an allergic response. Good luck...keep us posted.
There is an oral medication that controls break-outs. My husband had horrible problems with his feet and calves..and the little bumps would itch ... I wonder if there is a pill that might control the rash he has. I'm sure they'd need to analyse the type /cause of the rash first.
brindle, Go to this web site, the Smith &Nephew Secura EPC protective cream and also the Ointment are what Hospice supplies to us, I have also ordered the products from this site. The cream takes the fire out of red. We have had no rashes at all. I mix the cream and ointment together, keep the mixture in a plastic air tight container and use this on my husband at night. Even the respite center I took him to were amazed at his skin. Maybe this would work for you.
brindle i think if you have this issue for so long now its time to get him back to the dr and let him look at it again. my DH suffered this too and it seemingly was a fungal and or yeast type infection that only got better with steroid creme. i still use it as needed in small quantity. some of our folks are not tolerating the brand of diapers that have odor controlling chemicals and or the absorbing materials in the diapers. not the plastic so much but the chemical in the diapers can be quite irritating. different brands use different chemicals. its ahit/miss trying which work and dont irritate. infection is the main cause for concern with it going on that long. i would take him in to the dr and asses it again and try another med. i know if i used lotrimin or anything other than the steroid creme it made it worse and more irritated. try to stick with cremes that soothe like cetaphil that are free of dyes and irritants and use their soap in the shower to see if its some product you are using. i had a radical time finding what finally works. in the end cetaphil creme over the sterioid creme script by dr and tena serenity depend for men pullups and changing frequently finally made the difference. in my case making sure products that had no irritants was key.
Dr. gave us a steriod prescription cream to mix with OTC anti fungul cream. Been trying so many different diaper pull ups and guards I don't know which might be a problem (Depends, Tranquility, Assurance). Recently received some Tranquility and have been using the boosters in everything. I wonder if they are the culprit? The thigh areas look better it is the testi area that is really red. I cut the inner materials near the thigh so they won't rub the skin. During the day I have been using regular men's cotton shorts with a guard inside hoping this would be more comfortable and give more air. Nighttimes he is in the pull ups with extras stuff. By the way, I tried the new nighttime Tranquility and he was still wet in the morning. Did not work any better than the WalMart Brand.
