I am 57 and DH is 67. If he passes away before I'm 62 can I collect his SS benefit? If so, will it be at a reduced rate? I was under the impression I couldn't collect his or mine til I was at least 62. A friend recently told me I would be able to collect DH's when he passes no matter what my age. Any info would be appreciated. cs

i know you can collect at 60yr as a widow . it is a reduced rate of what DH received. if you want to wait til 62 or later to your specific age generated by SS its more.

i am sure someone will come along who has all the info.

i just googled SS website its seems if you collect at 60yr your benefit is reduced by 28.50% of spouses amount. thats a chunk. if you have childunder 16yr you can collect as a widow at reduced rates any time dont have to be 60yrs. its complicated. you can ask SS directly where you live.
